You can knock them out, but then you would be sinning.
Title
Hitting a Non-Muslim for Insulting Islam
Question
Respected scholars, as-salamu `alaykum. What to do in a situation when a kafir (disbeliever) starts insulting Islam, Allah, and His Messenger? Can you hit him? Jazakum Allahu khayran.
Answer
Wa`alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear brother in Islam, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His sake.
First of all, we’d like to stress that Muslims should be a source of guidance for all people. They have to set a good example for others in all aspects of life. This is because they have a mission to deliver the message of Islam in the best way. While delivering the message, Muslims may face problems and insults, which they must deal with wisely and with good admonition while making du`aa’ (supplication) for those who insult Islam, Allah, and His Messenger.
In his response to your question, the prominent Muslim scholar Sheikh Muhammad Iqbal Nadvi, director and imam of Al-Falah Islamic Center, Oakville, Ontario, Canada, states the following:
No, you can’t hit him, as he is in need of your guidance and da`wah. He insults either out of ignorance or because he is misguided. In either case, your duty is to clarify your point and try to convince him of the right thing.
This was the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with people insulting him on a daily basis and even hitting and beating him. He continued to explain the message to the people. Almighty Allah says to him: (For sufficient are We unto thee against those who scoff. Those who adopt, with Allah, another god: but soon will they come to know. We do indeed know how thy heart is distressed at what they say. But celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and be of those who prostrate themselves in adoration. And serve thy Lord until there come unto thee the Hour that is Certain) (Al-Hijr 15:95–99).
