Apple reveals MacBook Air

Really digging this new MacBook:

The world’s thinnest notebook.

MacBook Air is ultrathin, ultraportable, and ultra unlike anything else. But you don’t lose inches and pounds overnight. It’s the result of rethinking conventions. Of multiple wireless innovations. And of breakthrough design. With MacBook Air, mobile computing suddenly has a new standard

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

I was following the coverage of MacWorld today. Some fairly interesting stuff. Not sure if I am ready to jump on Apple bandwagon yet, but the online HD movie rental is pretty interesting (with Apple TV - no computer required).

Macbook Air does not have an optical drive. You can get optional external drive for $99 or use another computer's optical drive wirelessly. Wow! Talk about rethinking conventions.... Apple's just amazing.

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

Have you seen the price? Its like over a grand!!

And it doesnt even have a CD or DVD drive thing, so you cannit watch owt on it.

Now, maybes if it came in pink...

Actually, I'v always wondered how many people even use MAC? They'r fairly complicated machines to say the least and far too expensive here in the U.K, £700 last time I checked.

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

Starts at $1,799.

Apple actually prides itself on making easier to use machines. Though I am sure a lot of people have now grown so accustomed to the idiosyncricies and complexities of Windows-powered PCs/laptops that easier not be easier any more. :)

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

Most ultralight laptops don't come with optical media these days. Plus as Apple said MBR is supposed to be wireless so stream the movie from somewhere else.

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

Although the wireless access to an optical drive is certainly an innovative way of doing things... it just doesn't bode well with the core notion of portability.

On the one hand, they've made it thin and the form factor makes is ultra-portable, but not having a built in drive means that you think that optical drives are no longer a concern in portability and are available virtually everywhere to hook into by some other means.

My Lenovo tablet doesn't have an optical drive either - and even though I have USB DVD writer to go along with the tablet... I just feel its such a hassle to carry the two things everywhere cuz I don't know when and where I'll end up needing it to install something etc.

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

That's why they created internet accessible storage. My home server is always online for my downloading pleasure.

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

^ I know - and that's what I do too... but I just don't know when I'm on the go... say at a client site or in a classroom and someone gives me a CD to look at/ copy content etc. and this defies the whole portability stance in my mind. In the end, I suppose everyone has unique requirements.

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

Lack of optical drive also makes me queasy. Even though I should be used to it. I have a Dell Latitude D420 for work, whose optical drive is in the dock. Any time I travel, I never carry the dock with me, and I have survived more than a year. But my needs are different. Even when I am working in my office, with dock and optical drive, I have hardly ever used the optical drive, as everything is moved through the network and not through CD/DVDs etc.

I am seriously considering EEE PC from Asus for my daughter. For $400, it has 7" screen, Linux and 4 GB SD memory. Getting great reviews. It will primarily be for web surfing and home work. But combining Linux, with a 7" screen, only 4 GB hard disk AND no optical drive is making me shudder. I'd rather look for a deal on a local electronic store and get a "normal" laptop for $400. Complete with DVD-ROM, Windows Vista and all the other headaches that come with owning a Wintel machine.

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

Well, the new thing is the USB flash drives, no need to carry around bulky optical drives etc.

I have the EEE PC. Worried about the 4 gb storage too, but there is this mod out there where you can put in a 16 gb USB chip in there and there be done with it for storage.

BTW, there is still a hidden redo partition on the EEE PC which brings it all back to factory install.

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

Will it blend?

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

Talking about Apple, I read Job's speech on iTunes and movie rentals. Very confusing. You have 30 days to start watching, but once you watch you have 24 hours to complete the movie. What kinda crap shot dea is that? Sounds more like a Micro$oft kinda deal than Apple kinda deal. All that for $2.99 or $3.99.

Now my question is why should I go down Apple/iTunes route when my Netflix membership gives me UNLIMITED streaming viewing of more than 6,000 movies and television shows, where the movie stream starts apprximately 20 seconds after I order it. And I can watch as many as I want, whenever I wantn- with no extra fees, no 24 hour limits and basically no strings (except its not HD - big deal!).

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

With netflix you get the number of hours of streaming that you pay in monthly subscription fees. So if you have 3-out-at-a-time deal, u get 17 hrs of streaming per month. That's what i have.

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

^ No. That is old news. Netflix changed it to UNLIMITED streaming. Didn't you get the email? :)

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

Oohh, didn't know. I'm a happy camper. Now only if I can get a fast WWAN connection at the next job and my commute would be complete. :D

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

I was just reading about Netflix, do you have a use of a set-top box to use the service?

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

Spent about three hours chatting with a mac enthusiast whos been a mac technician/dealer/supplier/worshipper for the last 15 or so years. He hates it.

Re: Apple reveals MacBook Air

No, just your computer. Now, I seriously should get the extra cable to connect my laptop to my LCD HDTV; and figure out a better sound solution. Then I am all set. :)

Yesterday, I was watching the first episode of Knight Rider (that I had never gotten a chance to watch in my bachpann). Next on the list, first episode of Airwolf. Yayyy!!!
