Appetizer for a desi party

What are some good O’dourves for a young desi gathering. Age ranges from 26 to 41 and mostly males.

Please No samosas, pakoras or any other fried desi stuff. It doesn’t have to be desi.

Reading some other topics in this section I am thinking along the lines of Hummus and pita bread, may be?. I would really like to serve shrimp on skewers but then how do u grill shrimp?. any masala? or just plane olive oil, salt and pepper?

I am looking for a few unique and new ideas. The winner of will get a photo of the appetizer in their inbox.

26 to 41 is young????

Sweetheart - when you hit 30, everything under seems young.

funguy, my husband says the same thing about being 30!!!!
But its so true...now 41 seems my age group now!!

As for appetizers...How about bruschetta?? or I posted a recipe for chicken skewers a while ago..on one of the threads but I use that recipe for Shrimps as well...its a Thai recipe...

I love hummus and pita...I always bake half the pita...so the guests can decide if they want crunchy bread or soft bread.....You could even have a spinach dip...

Just some ideas..

Spinach dip with sourdough bread. YUMMM !

Russian salad… with lots of thousand island :yummy:

  1. Got some leftover chicken? Mix chopped up celery, mushrooms and/or bell peppers (whatever you have in the fridge), throw in some shredded cheese (cheddar and parmesan work best), season with salt and pepper. Put this mixture in appetizer sized squares of puff pastry, fold over and bake till golden.

  2. For shrimp, make sure you soak the wooden skewers for at least 30 minutes before using. You could mix up a concoction of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic paste (the desi kind), crushed red pepper and salt to taste. Marinate the shrimp in this for 30 minutes, thread on skewers and bake. Absolutely yummy.

  3. OR try brushing the shrimp with melted butter to which you add lemon juice, salt, pepper and very finely chopped parsley. Broil these rather quickly on both sides till barely opaque.

lightly seasoned and grilled or broiled shrimps with some major grey's mango chutney as a dip

How did the dinner go? were your appetizers a hit?

S.

Thank you all for some great ideas/recipes. I went with lightly lime/basil/salt seasoned shrimps, BBQ'ed on wooden skewers and it was a hit. I didn't have enough :(

A tip I learnt was to lightly oil the wooden skewers before loading shrimps. It helped in easy de-skewing.

Once again, thanks all.

stone crabs. they're fun.
