Re: appetite problem
Some of reasons of lack of appetite or early satiety are:
Hard to diagnose without knowing further details: Visit with a physician if losing weight or have other symptoms such as nausea/vomiting.
Anxiety/nervousness/depression
Thyroid disorder like low thyroid function
some infections or inflammatory diseases
Certain medications including cough syrups
Some nutritional supplements
digestive tract disorder such as feeding tube narrowing
other hormonal imbalance
Pregnancy in first three months
God forbid cancer
Re: appetite problem
My son has never had an appetite since he was born. He's had a number of issues - reflux, constipation, gastroparesis, Giardia, two hernias. All these things seem to have made him rather averse to eating but even so, he gets full too quickly.
A couple of things have helped. First, adding fiber to his diet in the form of psyllium husk. In US, theres a product called Benefiber that we use - no taste and you can add it to almost anything. This keeps his system moving the food thru.
Another thing is extra Zinc. This has an effect on appetite and even how food looks and tastes. We started this about two months back and it has had a nice effect on him. He's 7 yrs old and small for his age so a good dose is 5mg/day. If you want to try that, google it to find out a good dosage for yourself because its one of those things that arent good to take too much of.
Bon appetite!!
Re: appetite problem
A prescription drug Megesterol can be tried in some cases. Only after consulting a physician.
Re: appetite problem
Megase worked wonders for my dad when he was suffering the effects of chemo. But its not really for the young since it can some negative effects on fertility and sexual development. Theres another appetite enhancement prescription med called Periactin (Ciproheptadine) which is also very effective and safer for younger people to use...it also tends to have a sedative effect so best to take it in the evening, have a big meal and then nitey-nite! Also is a prescription med called Marinol which from what I've heard has amazing effects on appetite but its marijuana based so it comes with those side effects too...not something I;d try on my 7 yr old lol!
Probably its best to try to get the food moving thru the system with husk and give the zinc a try before you go trying the prescription route....but if all else fails, they DO work very well.
Re: appetite problem
Yes. Megace is hormonal based not good for pregnant women also.
Periactin is anti-cholinergic and can be used for both adults and young. Again side effects need to be considered.
Simple non-drug measures do help many times. Not taking meds containing appetite suppresants like ephedarine (or any sympathomimetics), treating underlying cause such as anxiety or thyroid disorder can restore appetite.
Other chemicals on which research is being done for stimulating appetite are:
metoclopramide,
dronabinol, EPA (fish oil),
erthythropoietin,
thalidomide,
ghrelin,
interferon,
melatonin,
some non-steroidal anti-inflammatories,
nandrolone,
antidepressants such as mirtazepine, and
atypical antipsychotics such as olanzapine.
Re: appetite problem
hey diwana...are you a doc? I have been reading about Ghrelin and am SO very interested in it...it is not yet approved for treatment in US but the clinical trials are moving it closer...
are you in another country? Have you seen it in use? any info would be greatly appreciated!
Re: appetite problem
I do have interest in healthcare and medicine.
Ghrelin I think is a natural chemical. It has both effects of increasing muscle mass and weight and also increasing appetite. Some drugs may increase its level in body indirectly.
You can search Medscape or Medscape Plus for more info. Good wishes for your son.
Re: appetite problem
Ok I have a similar problem. I very rarely ever get hungry... like you know, feel like my body needs food or anything. Oftentimes I do go 12-16+ hrs without eating anything, but its not like I dont WANT to eat or I cant eat... I actually crave lots of things throughtout the day... I never get hungry, I only eat cuz I crave stuff... and another thing is sometimes im not even hungry but I want something and I'll eat and eat and I wont feel full... its like my stomach is confused...
I dunno if that makes sense.. does it?
Re: appetite problem
Don't see a problem except that you seem to have no proper time to eat. if you eat all the time little stuff what you crave on, your appetite is really not strong enough.
Other times when you eat and eat and not getting satiety perhaps you have something on your mind related to the situation around you and you find eating a way to distract.
Biggest reasons for diet/weight change are
1- Psychological conditions. Not necessarily the person is crazy or whatevr but it may be something situational and temporary. Lets face it everer new event in our life is associated with food.
Our mind just works around appetite center too much.
a- Someone is born: We eat a good meal
b- Any festival: We eat good meal
c- Anniversary/birthday: We eat
d: Even if someone dies: We invite people and what do we do?...
eat!!
e- We are depressed: We either eat or stop eating.
f- We are happy: We eat. Rarely we stop eating.
g- We are anxious: We most of time stop eating. But may go eat too.
2- Thyroid disease.
3- Medications/supplements.
One good way for anyone is to watch the weight. Many real problems are associated with weight change.
