Appetite For Miracles

We muslims have an appetite fro miracles.

I do not understand why???

Quran repeatedly mentions Quraish asking Prophet saw for miracles and Prophet saw, also Jesus was constantly asked for miracles

Mark 8:11-13
11The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. 12He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it.”

And then most sects of Muslims, don’t tire mentioning miracles of their religious figures, no matter how bizzare and wierd they may be.

Logic dictates that a normal human who steadfastly holds to religious principles is greater than one who has supernatural powers.

But it seems most people want to hear fancy stories.

Re: Appetite For Miracles

:) SubhanAllah...

I think its important to highlight that we are talking about divine miracles (mu'jiza) which are humanly impossible, inimitable and which thus validate someone's claim to Prophethood. We should not include rare or unlikely occurrences or dreams in this category.

It is justifiable for people who received the Prophets (may Allah be pleased with them all) to ask for miracles, as the miracle would validate, inarguably, their claim to Prophethood, and thus that the message they would bring would be the Divine Word of Allah. Like Isa (as) and his miracle of healing, Musa (as) and his miracle of 'magic', and Muhammad (s) with his miracle of the Qur'an. This is because a miracle like these (mu'jiza) canNOT be immitated by anyone human, and thus must be divine. And SubhanAllah, the most important miracle of all is the one which is everlasting and that we can still witness and experience today- the Holy Qur'an! "And on this day I have perfected for you your religion!"

Of course, it is senseless, immature and perhaps simply a sign of weakness to persistently ask for miracles after the Prophets (as) have already performed the ordained miracles by the Grace of Allah. And Alhamdulillah they did not set about to perform a miracle each time they were asked to- for it would have been almost unbearable and confusing- and those who disbelieved would still have done so.

Also Iconoclast,

And then most sects of Muslims, don't tire mentioning miracles of their religious figures, no matter how bizzare and wierd they may be.

Can you give some examples of the types of 'religious figures' you are referring to? It is evident, to me, that after Muhammad (s) there is no need, or room for miracles of the mu'jiza type.

I read in a book ('Circles') by Tahir Mahmood, in a short story called 'Journey-mate',;some travellers on a bus were arguing about the authenticity of the 'miracle' of the Saint of Data Darbar in Lahore? (i THINK it is 'Data'?) And I could not make head nor tail of it- something about a rat running around inside a burning mountain? Are these the kinds of religious figures you are referring to? Such attributions are evidently shirk.

Re: Appetite For Miracles

"They (also) said: "Allah took our promise not to believe in an Apostle unless He showed us a sacrifice consumed by fire (from heaven)" Say: "There came to you Apostles before me with clear signs and even with what ye ask for: why then did ye slay them if ye speak the truth?" 3:183

"We only send the Apostles to give glad tidings and to give warnings: but the Unbelievers dispute with vain argument in order therewith to weaken the truth and they treat My Signs as a jest as also the fact that they are warned!" 16:56

Note the root of the word for 'signs': 'aayaat' - means verses and signs (miracles).

Re: Appetite For Miracles

Not only Muslims want Miracles, Look at the basic belief of Christianity, Son of God = Miraculous Birth
Death and resurrection = Greatest Miracle

Re: Appetite For Miracles

I am referring to miracles of Anbiya, Sahaba as well as Awliya.

Like birth of many noble personalities are described, and said that like 10 hoors descended from heavens to give bath to baby, i have read this about birth of Hazoor saw, of birth of Imam Hussain ra.

If no one descended from heavens to give then bath at birth does it lessen their virtues?
