In Iran the new parliament recently elected is expeted to discuss a law that will condemn to death anyone who decides to leave the muslim faith and convert to other religions.
Under the law, anyone born to muslim parents and decides to convert to another faith will face the death penalty
There is a concern that too many young people in Iran have abadoned Islam because they are tired of the many restrictions imposed by the faith. Turbaned tyrrants examplifing tolerance ala Khomeini?
Unofficial stats in iran state that as many as one millions young people in past 5 years in Iran have abandoned Islam and converted to other faith .
Re: Apostates, Iran to introduce law to kill them.
Not, from a paper , not sure which one, as I read several both in paper format and internet. It’s one of those news items that impresses the brain to remember.
I look at my own family tree, we have jews, christians, atheists and muslims. Some converted from muslim to christian, jew to christian, christian to muslim and others just don’t believe. I’ve got an aunty who is quite into New Age spirituality. In many islamic countries a few family members would definitely have faced death. Hmmmmmm, inheritance:) someone always profits pragmatically speaking of course.
I did a quick google search,if you want more info: here is a link
Re: Apostates, Iran to introduce law to kill them.
Many in Iran remember or are reminded of the good old days. They saw their standard of living decline after 1979, but it's easier to blame the government than to understand that the price of oil fell in half between 1980 and 1985, there was an Iran-Iraq war between 1980 and 1988, oil prices were at an all time low during the 1990's, and just when the price of oil picked up again, came the "Axis of Evil" crap leading to an expensive arms build up.
Iranians coming from Tehran had a zero religious background, at least prior to 1979. I knew of an Iranian in the US who was becoming not only a Christian, but a Catholic priest AKA Father. So, although it appears that a Muslim is converting to Christianity, it's really an athiest converting to something.
Re: Apostates, Iran to introduce law to kill them.
Jayr , a little misspeak in your last line. Perhaps high holidays in Christian calendar appear joyous and friendly filled with good food, good music and conviviality of humanity . Vatican / Christianity communities went through its most darkest of heinous crimes in the last millenium but with the increase of literate and educated followers things changed. Vatican/christians found themselves challlenged by scientists , philosphers and free thinkers who became statemen advocating civil law and a secular society. The revolution (s) /rebellion (s) against religious dogma became a long struggle toward postive governance and prosperity and enlightenment through public eduation. Now it's within the Islamic faith as population becomes more educated , people become literate and are taught to question and challenge . Islam is facing a challenge: an internal struggle and warfare which is exactly as it should be between an educated, free populace and an antiquated theocratic dogma. This natural evolution will initiate Islam into the 21st century.

I have a difficult time taking your opinions on Islam & Muslims seriously, given the fact that you consider Ayaan Hirsi Ali to be an ideal role-model for Muslims.

Yes, and I have bought many of her books and given them as gifts. She struggles for the rights of women which men would trample upon by religious means.
And I appreciate your compliment re taking my comments seriously given the fact you are not a female subjugated and suppressed by those who do in guise of religious authority.

A woman who openly renounces Islam and maligns and slanders it every chance she gets is NOT a role model for any Muslim.

I am a female. You're right though, I haven't been subjugated & suppressed by anyone in the guise of religious authority.
Re: Apostates, Iran to introduce law to kill them.
Getting back on topic, what do muslims in this board think? Should apostates be punished in any way at all, forget killing them which I don't think (hopefully) you support
Re: Apostates, Iran to introduce law to kill them.
^^ Heck no! Why to punish somebody for his beliefs? As long he is not committing offenses against fellow countrymen, he should be allowed to live a happy life.
BTW Islam has to gain the most by adopting a tolerant approach. Our Messenger pbuh was the most tolerant person around and so were his companions. Unfortunately after His death, the old Arab oligarchy took over Islam and slowly converted it to a tribal mishmash of intolerant, jingoistic set of practices.
Unfortunately the so-called flag-bearers of Islam today forget the kind-hearted turn-the-other-cheek attitude of our Messenger pbuh and instead commit heinous acts against other human beings all in the name of their religion.
Re: Apostates, Iran to introduce law to kill them.
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A Muslim author and critic of Islamic fundamentalism who was baptized a Catholic by Pope Benedict said on Sunday Islam is “physiologically violent” and he is now in great danger because of his conversion. “I realize what I am going up against but I will confront my fate with my head high, with my back straight and the interior strength of one who is certain about his faith,” said Magdi Allam.
In a surprise move on Saturday night, the pope baptized the 55-year-old, Egyptian-born Allam at an Easter eve service in St Peter’s Basilica that was broadcast around the world.
The conversion of Allam to Christianity – he took the name “Christian” for his baptism – was kept secret until the Vatican disclosed it in a statement less than an hour before it began.
Writing in Sunday’s edition of the leading Corriere della Sera, the newspaper of which he is a deputy director, Allam said: “… the root of evil is innate in an Islam that is physiologically violent and historically conflictual.”
Allam, who is a strong supporter of Israel and who an Israeli newspaper once called a “Muslim Zionist,” has lived under police protection following threats against him, particularly after he criticized Iran’s position on Israel.
He said before converting he had continually asked himself why someone who had struggled for what he called “moderate Islam” was then “condemned to death in the name of Islam and on the basis of a Koranic legitimization.” …]http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080323/wl_nm/pope_muslim_dc

VATICAN CITY - Italy’s most prominent Muslim, an iconoclastic writer who condemned Islamic extremism and defended Israel, converted to Catholicism Saturday in a baptism by the pope at a Vatican Easter service.
An Egyptian-born, non-practicing Muslim who is married to a Catholic, Magdi Allam infuriated some Muslims with his books and columns in the newspaper Corriere della Sera newspaper, where he is a deputy editor. He titled one book “Long Live Israel.”
