I dun mind telling people the range for my salary but only the ones that I am comfortable with.. It will be very awkward if my co workers started asking me that but its funny that we all know each other's salary since we all complain about it :D
BUT my favorite from Pakistan is when I hear how people have managed to assess my "assets and deposits" and tell each other ke us ke pass at least carorr tu jama ho ga and they even do the hisab for my savings because they think everything is free in the US and we pay for nothing.. it makes me laugh :D

salary question is only good for when your getting hired or interview. NOT when random people be asking because its none of their business. Like what mostly everyone said, it depends on whom and what person you are talking to. I would say the best thing is to be diplomatic when answering.

I get four moo cows, a donkey, and a handful of jelly beans. When I have enough moo cows, I will open my own factory. I don't know yet what the moo cows will manufacture, suggestions are welcome. The donkeys are more problematic, I may donate them to Brighton.

I work in HR, so I already know everyones salary in the office, lol....but you are right, it is strictly confidential, and you could be written up for disclosing that information. However, it is a brown thing for people to ask! But even to this day, my fiance has never asked me how much money I make! Of course when my mom asked me, I told her! But my dad has never even asked me!
In my family, my parents, my brothers and bhabis all know. I dont mind telling them because they are my family and would keep to them selves and be happy with what ever it may be. Masha Allah, my brother earns very well and it is like a curiousity package for every one to find what it is. Hunh! People should really stop poking and showing so much interest in others life

That can work with relatives but with co-workers, they all already know by your designation whether its 5 figures or 6 firgures, they want the decimal-placed precise values.
