APDM’s strike call goes largely unheeded
PESHAWAR/QUETTA/ Karachi/Islamabad/ LAHORE: The All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM)’s call for a complete strike to protest the re-election of President Pervez Musharraf in uniform here on Saturday went largely unheeded. Businesses were partially closed and public transport was not operational until late afternoon in Peshawar, when a few buses started their usual routes. The police set up stern security arrangements and heavy contingents were deployed in the markets and thoroughfares. APDM activists protested on the streets and forced shopkeepers to close their shops. The workers, led by their provincial leadership, set up camp at Yadgar Chowk. Leaders of the alliance then led a rally around the city and back to the camp. Meanwhile, a complete strike paralysed businesses in Quetta. Local businessmen shut down their shops and offices, attendance at public offices was very low, and banks remained closed as well. People in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, however, rejected the APDM’s strike call and traffic flowed as usual in all parts of the city, APP and Online reported. All business centres, major and minor, remained open. Industries also continued production and ports in Karachi remained operational. Although private vehicles roamed the roads as usual, some of the public transport vehicles stayed off the road in Lahore for fear of being stopped and damaged by diehard opposition activists.
