I’m moving out next month and have been looking at properties.. initially I was going to be living alone so an apartment was the obvious choice. Now however circumstances have changed and a friend and I will be renting together. So we’ve arranged to view a few properties.. some of them are apartments and a couple of small houses too.
First off we weren’t considering houses because we thought that apartments would probably be safer and more secure.. also bills might be less?
The rent prices however are quite similar.. infact getting more space in the houses and some of them look a lot cosier.. so now we’re pretty open to either.
So what are the pros and cons of a house over an apartment or vice versa.. when presented with the option which would you/have you opted for and why?
Make a list of must haves. See what neighborhood you want to live in. And decide from there. If you're renting it shouldn't be so hard. When we were renting our must haves was a safe, happening and easily commutable place. Now that we have a kid we live in a safe, child friendly and quiet place. Set your priorities straight.
I don't know how it is in the UK but owning a house here is very safe if you're in the right area. If you decide to rent/buy in the ghetto prepare to put bars on ur windows and doors. I think area is very important when looking for a place.
You might want to keep few these points in mind while looking for a property.
1) find out about the difference between the council tax of a house and flat.
2) go for gas central heating and hob...It's way cheaper than electricity.
3) house with a garden might be a hassle to maintain.
4) close to tube station.
Good points.. need to find out about the council tax... most of the places we looked at have electric hobs but heating is all gas..
True about the garden... hmm.
No tubes at all in this place.. and the town is actually really tiny, probably won't take more than a half hour walk to get from one side to the other - Thanks :)

Renting.. the town is pretty decent so not really worried about being in an unpleasant environment because it's all pretty nice.. But you can never be too safe I guess!
I am not sure how the rental agreement about electric bill and maintenance goes in UK but if I were to live alone(or with friend) in US/Canada , I'll prefer condo/apartment to save myself hassle of maintenance and water/electric bills and in some area of cleaning snow. With kids of course you need more space and privacy too then getting a house makes sense.
I've rented both... if I was a student and looking to rent, I'd go with apartment. Its so much easier.. Life is easier in Apartment. Houses come with so much headache. Yes more room. About privacy, I had more in apartment becaue of the setup. I absolutely loved living in Apartment. No maintanance headache. More utlities were covered in the rent.

Unfortunately none of the utilities are covered in any of the apartments we're looking at :( Kind of sucks but anyhow I guess seeing all the places will make the decision a lot easier.
