4 was the best so far! theorist, tlk ? did you guys watch?
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
ARE WE IN A BLACK HOLE
^ There is a theory, which no one has anyway of proving, that our universe is a giant black hole. I seriously doubt though.
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
No, haven’t watched after the second episode. I have been too busy wallowing in self pity lately. Too sad to care for TV. Will watch it soon. :hinna:
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
Episode 4 indeed was best so far philosophyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Really nice to Islamic scholars given credit : ) it was a very nice way to include alll
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
Plus 1 Philosophyyy.
That gentleman Al ? was one bright person. What a change he made to photography (if I recall). Amazing stuff.
During that time, Islam was the seat of knowledge. With a thirst for books. At the very time book burning was going on in China. Good stuff.
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
Oifu wanted to watch part I again. Was more fun this time. TLK a whikr back had talked abt limit of how far back we can see. 13.8 billion.
The Italian gentleman Bruno Giovanni after Copernicus who Was burned at the stake cause he believed universe to be infinite. Refused to believe stuff written in the Bible. That Sun revolved around Earth. He was jailed. And executed.
The address line. Concept amazing. Our address
Earth
Solar System
Milky Way
Cluster of galaxies
??
Universe
Universe 13.8 bill yrs old. Earth 4.5 billion. Solar system 11 billion.
If 13.8 billion yrs condensed into 1 year, discoveries inventions only 1 second old. Mohammed 3 sec. Buddha 5 sec.
So how much more can we find out in one more equiv year. Mind numbingly fantastic.
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
TLK a whikr back had talked abt limit of how far back we can see. 13.8 billion, but too lazy to find that post of mine.
.
I wanted to add to that wherever I talked about the limit of 13.8 billion years far back.
Another theory, which actually supports a finite universe model (my previous explanation defined an infinite model) defines our universe as a 3D surface curved around the 4th dimension, creating a 4D sphere (or hyper-sphere). Its just like you take a 2D surface of plastic sheet and curves it around the third dimension to create a 3D beach ball. Just like anything else inside that 4D sphere, light also follows the curvature. So if you are standing inside that sphere, and look anywhere, your line of sight will follow the curve. There is a theory that inside such universe, if you have a super powerful telescope and look through it, you can see the back of your head. The only thing that will not let it happen is because light from the back of your head, that traveled in the opposite direction has not traveled around the universe and reached you yet.
In such universe, no matter where you are, you will always find yourself in the middle, as equal amount of universe would be spread out on either side of yours.
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
" The only thing that will not let it happen is because light from the back of your head, that traveled in the opposite direction has not traveled around the universe and reached you yet."
Confused. So can you see the back of ur head or not? Previous sentence stated you can. ( maybe because light follows curvature of sphere?)
Not getting 4D sphere concept. Issue it packed. Hollow. Or mix of both?
Earth is a sphere. And we are all on surface of sphere. But in ths 4D sphere we r inside the sphere?
Did a jinn add the am too lazy bit?
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
Dang it, I wanted to write the "too lazy" bit at the end of my first sentence. That is the magic of quoting and replying from the phone.
Sorry to confuse you. What I wanted to say that theoretically, in such universe you could see the back of your head if you have a very powerful telescope, but in our case, even if we have one, we cant see the back of our head because light traveling in the opposite direction hasnt circled the universe yet.
Its very hard, in fact impossible for us to visualize a 4D sphere. I read that mathematicians could do that because they think in that language. But just to make it sound interesting, let me say that just like shadow of a 3D ball is a 2D circle, shadow of a 4D hypersphere will be a 3D sphere. Michio Kaku in his good days wrote a book called 'Hyperspace'. If you get some time, read it. An excellent book on the topic of 4D universe.
It does not matter if you are on inside or outside of that sphere. Because our line of sight is following the curvature, universe would appear flat to us.
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
Will get that book. Thanks.
Last two sentences make sense. But are we inside or outside the 4D sphere? I would think inside.
PS. In honor of funda man who is also religious, and several other religious friends here (not you Mr. Monk) I pledge to stop ALL forms of religious debate. And will self impose a one month ban if I break this pledge. Cheers.
Yesterday while watching the latest episode, i realized something for the first time. During the title sequence, at the time when the word COSMOS comes on the screen, initially only first and last letters CS emerge from the center, then spread to the respective side of the screen, and then the middle four letters appear, completing the word COSMOS. It dawned on me yesterday that the initial appearance of CS signifies Carl Sagan's name as they are his initials.
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
:)
im glad they realize they owe him all this.
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
Of course they are fully dedicating the show to him. Carl's name comes as one of the writers, although I can guarantee you that most of the script is new.
Re: Anyone watch Cosmos?
Carl segans wife was one of the writers of his show and this show.
Trying to recall last show. Drawing a blank. Wanted to post earlier. But was waiting for resident hull subscriber to finish viewing.
