Anyone studying at DMU Leicester or Leicester Uni?

Hi,

I have just been offered PhD studentship at DMU, Leicester. Thought I’d ask about the place and Leicester in general from anyone from there.

My cousin has did his undegrad and masters there! Ill see if i can ask him. Its supposed to be a good uni and Leicester has quite a few asians shops.

De Montfort is a good uni. Leicester is a nice enough place. Plenty of brown people and...they have the National Space Centre there!!

Leicester has a great student community as well as a desi community. It's a nice city and not too far away from anything. My cousin has studied at DMU and had a great time. I'm sure you will too.

I’ve heard good thing about DMU. However it depends what you want out of your PhD…if it’s just the letters before and after your name you’ll probably enjoy Leicester and the Uni. If you want to start a career in academics and want to become I’d go for a ranked university:

Also, in my experience, when it comes to a Ph.D. degree, rankings don’t matter as much. It’s your supervisor and his/her expertise and reputation in the field of research that plays an important role in providing an initial direction for your career. Also, a candidate’s own initiative during the residency to publish and participate in research activities will determine how successful he/she will be in obtaining a good position post-Ph.D.

I was wary about the rankings too. But then its my second supervisor from EPFL switzerland, Professor Pascal Frossard, who is like a very big name in Video Coding and who has worked on many European projects, who woos me to it. So I guess, the university won't matter as much as the publications would.

Sorry I don't know why I thought it was a business degree. I would agree with Lucid to a certain extent on the reputation of your supervisor but there is a certain amount of snobishness especially in the business schools about where you received your training.
