Anyone Here From Ivy League Universities?

Would you care to Give some tips on how you or somebody you know got admitted? I know strong grades is not the only thing they look for.

ivy only or non ivy schools like stanford, chicago, northwestern, berkeley etc too :halo:

Re: Anyone Here From Ivy League Universities?

I thought Stanford was ivy.. no?

I got into BU (if that qualifies as ivy these days), I had applied to their combined BS/MD program. I didn't go because I went for another school I was more interested in. Anyway, a good gpa, SAT scores, recommendation letters, and extra curriculars is the key. In my case, I went to a health professions academy instead of a regular high school and spent all my 3 summers doing research at different hospitals, and finally getting a research placement at Harvard for 2 years. I got some really nice recommendation letters from there which I think made it easy in the app process. If you are interested in doing something (medicine, engineering, architecture, etc etc), you should really gather some experience shadowing professionals, that shows the school how serious and dedicated you are. Also, personal essay is a big one. Hubby got into Harvard and MIT but chose to go to Univ of Miami due to personal/family reasons. He was the valedictorian and had a 1480 on SAT (we both had the same exact score for some WEIRD reason :D), was enrolled in a million honor societies and was an AP scholar. He didn't do much outside of school though in terms of extra curr. He also has a resume which he sent to all the schools that outlines basically anything and everything. I can ask him for tips if you want, he's a hardcore nerd.. glasses, calculator in the backpocket, and everything.. jk.

Standford, personally I believe is the hardest hardest to get into because of their acceptance rate and their prefrence of more creative/diverse applicants.
Please do give some advice on the admission process, what helped and what didn’t in getting into the Top Universities.

Standford is not Ivy League, Tier one..in the Top Universities of USA.
You both made it to Harvard..wow!

I know of someone in High School specifically looking to get into Ivy League Universities. He has a very strong academic background as well as is in the extra curricular activities. I would really appreciate if you could ask your husband for detailed tips for essays and more on the letters of recommendations. How was the interviewing process.
You were saying that experience by shadowing professionals help a lot. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Anyone Here From Ivy League Universities?

His MIT interview was 'racist' haha, the lady who interviewed him was Jewish and kept making weird comments. A few months later, he got a letter saying he had been waitlisted. His dad got so pissed off, he called the school demanding another interview session. Then finally after this and that, they sent a letter of acceptance. It wasn't worth anything though, he didn't even go! I was so mad but he doesn't care.

Oh that sucks! His father did the right thing though.

Re: Anyone Here From Ivy League Universities?

And Shay Btw you both got 1480 on SAT…:hayaa: super geniuses…Isnt somewhere in the 98th percentile

What makes a university Ivy League? I mean how do we know its ivy league?

Re: Anyone Here From Ivy League Universities?

shay ... BU was never Ivy league. I believe they are america east conference

erudition..its a group of 8 private old east coast unis atheletic group...really, kinda like ACC, big 12, atlantic 10, PAC10 etc.

its 8 unis, harvard, penn, yale, dartmouth, cornell, columbia, brown, princeton.

and while schools like chicago, standord, northwestern run circles around them in many areas, they can not be considered Ivy.

Ask99- stanford is tough, but it depends on what major..not all majors at ivy or top institutions are created equal

True.
The person I know is aiming for the Big 8..most preferably Yale(his dream one I' d say).
I have asked him to make a Plan A , B ,C ..it should n't be that one or nothing.(he wants to pursue Medicine)

So any tips on the essays and interview..those are the make it or break it aren't they?

Re: Anyone Here From Ivy League Universities?

Out of my 1500 graudating students in college, only one made it to Yale University School of Medicine. Competitive? Yup you bet.

These days grades are not everything and admission committees are looking to more than just a number before they admit a person. I would say extracurriculars, essays, recommendation letters also play a big role in this process.

My brother was waitlisted at Harvard and Brown and the only reason they rejected him was because of his lack of extracurrculars. He had a 1500 on the SAT with a 92.7 overall GPA in high school which was amazing because we went to a specialized science high school in New York City. With that said, make sure your friend is involved in something besides the library.

Among all Ivys, Brown is the easiest one to get into as well as the easiest one to graduate from….no wonder John F. Kennedy Jr. decided to go to Brown instead of Harvard!!….While getting into an Ivy institution is tough, some departments are easier to get into than others…I have quite a few Harvard/Penn/Yale undergrads in my MBA class and they have confirmed this notion….For instance getting into Yale Law School is as tough as one can think of but getting into the computer science dept at Yale is of course not as tough (believe me or not but both Yale and Harvard teach computer science too!)
