JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

New College of California, North Bay is currently seeking to fill the
following position:

Full-time Graduate faculty & coordinator for our graduate program in
Humanities and Leadership with an emphasis in Culture, Ecology and
Sustainable Community.

Background:

New College of California is an accredited institution of higher learning
whose mission is to integrate education with personal transformation and
social change to create a more Just, Sacred, and Sustainable World (see
www.newcollege.edu ). Our academic programs and curriculum have been
developed to create the pathways for our students to walk toward this
better world.

In 1998, New College of California established its North Bay Campus for the
study of Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community (see
www.newcollege.edu/northbay/ ). Over the last five years the North Bay
program has expanded into several concentration areas while retaining a
central core of studies. The new graduate faculty position is in the Core
Leadership Seminar section of the program and has become available due to a
marked increase in our graduate student population. We will begin a new
section starting in September 2003.

Job description:

  1. Faculty will be responsible to teach and facilitate one weekend per
    month or one day of each of two weekends per month (i.e. 2 Saturday per
    month). Responsibilities on the teaching weekends are:

a) Prepare materials for students to do prior to class

b) Conduct class

  •     utilizing a variety of teaching modalities over the course of the 
    

program and addressing diverse learning styles of students

c) Evaluate student learning through various assignments

d) Conduct also an integrative seminar that links various program
components together

Other responsibilities include:

  1. Collaborative curriculum design. Other faculty, staff (and occasionally
    students) collaboratively redesign aspects of the program. The new faculty
    will participate fully in this process potentially taking a leading role.

  2. Advising. The new faculty will advise up to 15 students each semester.
    This includes the following:

  •     becoming familiar with each student's academic plan 
    
  •     meeting with each student at least once per month and assisting 
    

them to stay on track

  •     evaluating independent studies (field research) and thesis as 
    

well as evaluating course work

  •     providing administrative guidance to students (i.e. making sure 
    

your advisees are aware of important dates such as registration, financial
aid deadlines)

  •     helping students link up with thesis mentors 
    
  •     participating on thesis committee 
    
  1. Administrative responsibilities. Each faculty member of the program is
    responsible for preparing readers, coordinating the weekend’s guest
    presenters, assorted correspondence, and attendance at faculty meetings.
    Other administrative duties may also pertain.

Skills and background required:

Teaching experience

Expertise in teaching for a variety of learning styles

Expertise in various teaching methodologies

Strong leadership skills

Expertise in consensus building, facilitation and negotiation

Background in the environmental movement

Other criteria:

Interested in becoming part of a learning community

Graduate degree or equivalent

Lives in Bay area or will relocate to this area

Salary:

$32,000 to $36,000

Sounds interesting, but the big minus point is the low salary offered. At least it's not enough to make me move away from here. :)

Yes, it is hard to live in Bay area on that kind of salary alone!
