anyone from queens, ny?

salaam everyone, i’m a medical student from california and i’ll be joining a medical campus in queens, ny for an elective program in april. i dont know much about the place and i’d be very pleased if someone from there reading this could tell me about any nearby masjids, halal restaurants, etc? thanks.

Re: anyone from queens, ny?

I don't live in Queens, but I've been there once in a while. There are plenty of Pakistani and Afghani restaurants. I am sure once you are there, people will guide you about masjid etc.

Re: anyone from queens, ny?

depends on where in queens.

i'll be in elmhurst, queens. i'll be there by myself so i need to kind of have a sense of my surroudings...im assuming it'll be very cold there in that time?? i heard there r lots of desi ppl there.

I live in Queens infact I lived in Elmhurst around an yr 2 yrs ago. Jackson Heights is near by so no need 2 worry abt the halal grocery/meat/food things. Infact u’ll also find sum halal restaurants in Elmhurst itself. From ur title I am assuming u wud working in Elmhurst hospital which is v near 2 Jackson Heights. As a neighbourhood ELmhurst is a nice place where all the buses are available and best of all the Queens mall is near by
p.s. I can give u a personal tour of the area if u r willin 2 take the risk :halo:
j/k wud really luv 2 help out coz I know how it feels 2 b a newb :frowning:

simply seema...hey thank you so much, that is really very nice and sweet of u. i dont know how much free time i will have cuz i hear its going to be a crazy busy schedual, but yeah, it would be interesting to get a feel of the area from someone living there. :) im glad that all the halal stuff is so nearby. r u a student?

im looking into the hospital's own housing accomodation to stay, but i do know some girls who have gone to new york and stayed with a desi family as a paying guest. that is also in my mind somewhere, so if anyone has any idea about any of that, lemme know.

Re: anyone from queens, ny?

^ definitely take her up on her offer, u wont regret it!

Dr. Sahiba,
I live in Jackson Heights, very near to Elmhurst, and I can assure you that you won't have any trouble finding halal food, restaurants, masajid, etc. I would also be pleased to take you on a tour when you arrive---just PM me!

In Jackson Heights itself, you want to go to 74th and 73rd streets, between 37th and Roosevelt Avenues. Both of these streets are almost exclusively desi---there's a Patel Brothers supermarket, a big vegetable store (subzi mandi), and lots of clothing and gold shops. There's also a theater (Eagle Theater) that shows desi films, lots of music and film shops, plenty of restaurants, sweet shops, and food carts, and on 37th avenue and also 37th road, there are some good halal butchers. You can reach this area by taking a 7, E, F, V, or R train to the 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue stop, and everything is right there when you exit the station. There are also major supermarkets and drugstores in the area, as well!
Good luck, and please do let me know if you have time for a tour! I live only a few blocks from Roosevelt Hospital, and my fiance that I'm marrying next month will be living at my place and I'm sure he'd love to welcome you as well---he is from Lahore and works as a physician assistant.

About it being cold in April----it will be probably in the 50s and 60s for most of the month. Early in the month the nights might get a bit chillier but insha'allah we're finished with snow for this season (we just had a little sprinkling this morning!)

Re: anyone from queens, ny?

no im from brooklyn..wadduuuup lol

Re: anyone from queens, ny?

that was like an early April fools joke today! LOL Didn't expect snow.

I know! I didn't even look out my window when I was getting ready this morning, and when I walked out the front door it was like whaaaa????

Re: anyone from queens, ny?

lol hubby called me whlie i was sleeping to tell me its snowing. I mumbled into the phone "waht u want to do theN" he siad "im just letting u know"

you are landing in the middle of Desi neighborhood..shouldn't have any problem finding masjids, halal restaurants or grocery stores! hope, you know how to deal with Tharki Uncles, cuz you gonna find 'em everywhere! Good Luck..

hey jaime, thanks for all ur help. i just tried to write u a PM but it wouldn't allow me as i've only put up 3 posts and u can only send a pm when u've written atleast 25 posts. bummer. but all i was saying is that i really appreciate all the info u've provided (and everyone else who's replying--thank u!!!!) since i'm there for just one month and dont know how my schedual is going to be like at the hospital, i honestly cannot say anything right now, but a tour does sound very nice. i'll keep u in mind and let u know whenever is a good time for me and maybe inshaAllah we can do something. maybe u, me, and simply seema (another member here) can all go out for some coffee/chai or something? as far as ur going-to-be husband not going to mind my stay at ur place as a paying guest, and as nice as it is for u to keep me in mind, my parents might not be comfortable with that. i think my family is looking for maybe a girls only home or something. i hope ur understanding what im trying to say? do u have any female friends who share an apt who may be interested?

im so relaxed now, knowing all that stuff is going to be so near. i just hope i dont get mugged while im there because new york is known for that. :)

EWill, lol about the tharki uncles... i'll handle them, i lived in pakistan for a few yrs where i did my med school, so i know how to handle losers now i think. :)

I m lucky enuf 2 b in a field 4 which I hv 2 b a student all my life :bummer:
I hv sent u a PM for the accomadation thou, lemme know if u hv any other questiones

nycgori, salaam... again, i tried replying via pm but i couldnt. i have ur number saved, inshaAllah when i am there i'll try giving u a ring. :) and very best of luck in ur new life with ur soon to be husband!
