anyone from Qatar?

salam
how are you?

my nephew is going to Qatar this summer as he is required to do the rotation at Al wabra Wild Life Preservation Centre in Al Shahaniyah.

he has never been to any place other than Canada, the US, Belize and the Caribbeans. his parents are a bit worried how he is gonna handle the desert life out in the middle of nowhere. his Veterinary College has arranged rotations in Qatar for the first time. no one from Cornell University has been there.

i would appreciate if anyone can give some info, advice or list some ‘do’s and donts’ while in the deserts of Qatar…both weather-wise and from personal security and safety point of views.

thank you in advance.

Salams bro KKF

It so happens I live in Qatar … InshaAllah, give your nephew my telephone number and I can help him get settled in. Although his reserve is in the middle of Qatar the only thing there other than the reserve is a famous national camel track, can be quite boring to stay there, unless of course he goes to Doha regularly … So on the most part he will need transport eventually, to come in and out of Doha, but they might provide him with a vehicle, or they might not.

But otherwise it can get dusty so the eyes tend to feel it first, but in a nature reserve there are trees and stuff so he will be shielded from that mostly. The desert has dry heat so it is dangerous since we don’t feel thirsty like we do in humid climates, so often people pass out from dehydration because they didn’t drink water … The dry heat takes people by surprise they are so convinced that they are fine, but they are not … Colour of urine is a good indicator that they need water.

In Qatar … the Qataris are all “kings” they think they are anyway, so it is better to avoid conflict with them … Some of them can be really nice. I’ll be happy to give him a tour of the fun places inshaAllah.
