Anyone here familiar with upper West side of Manhattan area? (particularly renting out an apt/studio?)

The West side is generally a nice area to live. Depending on what part you live in, you might find young families, students etc.

Sorry it took so long to respond.
As per your situation, a studio or one bed would run $900-$1200 depending on the location, size. Also be wary of broker fees that can run up $$. I would also say $600-$1000 for a shared apartment. I am not sure how interested you are in that. There are many muslims that have apartments available, check with OPS on campus. There is also an infamous website based out of San Francisco that has NY Listings (I am not sure if I am allowed to advertise the name).
The area that you are looking at is mostly safe particulary around broadway and the water. I would ofcourse, use caution late at night. If you have any further specific questions, do send a PM my way.
