Anyone been South America?...

Im interested in doing a Spanish immersion course in the summer…
I want to have fun whilst doing it and experience something new…so cant be bothered with Spain…
Thinking of Colombia or Venezuela…they and Ecuador are supposed to speak the easiest Spanish…The Carribean parts and Chile are supposed to be terrible…almost like going to Morocco to learn Arabic…
Anyone been to either of these countries?..would i live ok with 400 pounds a month?..

Re: Anyone been South America?..

Yes, you’ll live comfortably with 400 pounds in Venezuela. Assuming you’ll share accommodations. Of course you cant expect to live like a king. I’d recommend you not go to Venezuela on your budget, you can get stuff for cheaper elsewhere.

Just for an idea, see this for lodging in Venezuela : http://www.tuinmueble.com/index3.html

Wherever you go, rent in person. Prices are inflated for the internet crowd.

Re: Anyone been South America?...

Have u looked at mexico?

Re: Anyone been South America?...

Id assume standard of living is more expensive in Mexico or am i mistaken Sara?...

And **hskhan **thanks for the info...i was told that apartments arent easy to come by in Venezuela as most people tend to live with their family so the choices that you have tend to be either lodge with a family which isnt a bad idea cos you'll probably pick up some spanish more easily or live in a hotel which sounds like an extortionately expensive idea...is this correct or have i been misinformed?...

Re: Anyone been South America?...

It's implied you'll have to live with someone. Hotels are out of the question with £400. Find a youth hostel. If you're going in the summer, rent a dorm at any university. Classes should be out, and rooms should be empty.

If you've decided to choose Venezuela, stick to the coast. Make home in Caracas and visit the townsfolk only with friends :-).

Thnaks bro.,..

Re: Anyone been South America?...

If you want to learn proper spanish, spain is the place to go. Have you been there already?

Ecuador and Mexico are not south america. I would not recommend ecuador or columbia. Personally, i would go to Peru. I always wanted to see the Machu Picchu runis in the Andes.

Re: Anyone been South America?...

Ecuador is South America...
From my understanding South American spanish and Central American spanish is significantly different to spanish spoken in Spain...
And thing is Spain is too close to home...and it will be signifcantly more expensive to live in...
Btw...does anyone know where to find a cheap course cos on the net the courses are ridiculously priced?...

Re: Anyone been South America?...

I know mexico isnt south america..but it is a spanish speaking country :p

Re: Anyone been South America?..

Re: Anyone been South America?..

yaa phir ‘Baar se lo na’…do chaar botal:D

Re: Anyone been South America?...

When you wanna go?

To learn spanish you don't "really" need to go to spanish speaking country, just start hanging out with spanish speaking people, and if you really want to push it get a spanish-speaking girlfriend (I'm assuming you're a guy).

Re: Anyone been South America?...

Mexico is not in South America, here are countries in Americas:

North America: Canada, US, Mexico
Central America: Guatemala, Hondarus, Nicaragua, Costa Rico, Panama
South America: Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Aregentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uraguay, Guyana, Sariname, French Guiana (French colony) and Brazil.

All countries starting from Mexico and southward to Aregentina speak Spanish except Brazil which has been a Portugese speaking country.

About learning good Spanish, I think Mexico has been a pretty good Spanish country more so because of business activity. Northern towns, close to US border like Monterey, Juarez, San Juan, Laredo, Tijuana, Chihuahua, Hermosillo etc. etc. very nice but are a bit expensive.

You can have lower standard of living in souther cities like Puebla, Vera Cruz, Oaxaca, Guadalajara but they are a bit risky, even the police is as bad as Pakistani. More about Mexico and other Latin American countries later...

BRAZIL

Re: Anyone been South America?...

You can go to Puerto Rico, learn Spanish and still be in the USA.

Domincan Republic is another place.

Cuba is a great place, very cheap, very safe. But US citizen have a hard time going there.

Re: Anyone been South America?...

Brazil is a totally different experience as compared to Puerto Rico, Cuba or Dominican Republic but Brazil is not only for language it is a far richer cultural and ethnically diverse country.

The interesting thing is that in Brazil you can learn both Portugese and Spanish at the same time. I have a lot of personal pictures of Brazil when I will discover how to compress them, then will post them here.

Take for example Sao Paulo; it has the biggest Japanese population outside Japan, one of the biggest Arab population, sizable North African and Italian factions.
