Anybody affected by ASD or Autism?

Anybody here is directly or indirectly affected by Asperger’s syndrome or Autism?
Anybody in your family or you know of anyone with these symptoms?
What kind of help you are getting, if any?

Re: Anybody affected by ASD or Autism?

I have two who are "on the spectrum"...eldest and youngest. Eldest gets special-ed class (12-1-2 which means 12 kids, 2 aides and one sp ed teacher), speech therapy and OT. Youngest had ABA therapy till age 3 then tested normal and age-appropriate. Both hubzand I are not "people" persons, we prefer to be alone, we work better alone, we're both quiet and engineers. Much more to our story but thats the basics. I'm not quite sure what your questions are or what your issues may be...perhaps if you elaborate a bit we can answer more specifically. Autism touches 1 in about 150 households in USA they say...so its something that is pretty prevalent these days. Depending on the severity, it can be difficult to deal with and find the proper help for so if theres anything you;'d like to ask please dont hesitate.

Re: Anybody affected by ASD or Autism?

^ My son was diagnosed with it, when he was 3. He has been going through ST & OT sessions since then. There have been some good and some bad days. I have heard that these are western diseases and not found in south asian countries like Pakistan. I wanted to check if really thats the case. or its just the unavailability of statistics.

Unlike yourself, we are bit social, and at times find it hard to explain it to others, when he behaves in a bit awkward manner. I have stopped caring about people's expressions now. I don't feel like explaining either. But still want to know if things change when he grows up. He is 5 now, and I would like to know what to expect 2-3 years down the line.

Re: Anybody affected by ASD or Autism?

Thats a tough one to call Robert. Some kids on the spectrum grow up to be - like hubby and I - just not that "into" people, prefer to do things alone or in very small groups, prefer things to be very clear and straightforward. Just a bit "odd". The right therapies can make a huge difference, there are all kinds of medications and diets that you can try...we never give up. My eldest son is more severely affected than youngest, the middle one not at all. Youngest prefers to play alone, incessantly asks math questions, flaps his hands like a bird but otherwise has tested as "age appropriate". Eldest has more of a struggle. He's my "sunshine boy", very excitable happy and loving, perhaps overly so which makes people take a step back at times. Yet, we have all the right therapies and interventions in place so inshallah he will find a good place in the world for himself. I really dont worry much about what others think anymore...I used to for sure. But you get to grow a pretty thick skin after a bit. For sure, its a bit tougher because I'm gori and hubs is Desi...so the goris say well its all because she married a desi and the desis say for sure its that gori. lol. Anyway, autism affects almost as many kids in Pak as it does anywhere else. Its just that Pak doesnt have the facilities to diagnose or treat it to anywhere near the degree that US does. Disabilities in Pak are kind of hidden away know what I mean? And the professionals who could really help tend to seek work outside of Pak. I dont know if this helps at all...but feel free to pm me or ask anything else you'd like....
