Especially in the US.

Re: Any welders on gs?
"When I first looked at the blinding spark of the welding arc, I thought of St. Paul's revelation. It's an experience that I cannot forget. There's that moment of terror when that arc hits. It's like a miniature atomic explosion, and it's beautiful, absolutely extraordinary. It's a bit frightening even. You have darkness, and suddenly you touch a piece of steel and a blinding electric explosion occurs. When you leave the arc connected, the metal begins to boil. You get bubbles, the flux that surrounds the rod melts -- and when you look at it very closely it's like lava flowing, it's a volcanic experience. The material changes states. I can't help but think of Vulcan and the forge -- imagery of the gods involved with fire. Welding is a physical experience of fire."

Re: Any welders on gs?
Really? Is it not a common profession at all among Pakistanis? I really would like to learn when I have money and time in the future, as a hobby.
Re: Any welders on gs?
U'ld get a lot of them in Pakistan Sarah. Actually I believe this pakistani guy at my work used to do this stuff before he moved to USA. Do u have any question i n particular or u just wanted to know?
Re: Any welders on gs?
I can weld, but I rather hate it. I am almost always burning myself on something that remains hot long after it should have cooled off.
I can also cook, and a basic blow torch can be useful when making creme brulee......
Re: Any welders on gs?
^ lol
Re: Any welders on gs?
I have done a bit of welding in my time...
Its blinding alright if you don't cover your face. Thing is you can't see anything through the mask so you have to sort of position yourself and then in one synchronous movement start welding and move the mask in front of the eyes. If you happen to see the arc it is indeed an "*experience that you cannot forget".. *at least for the next hour or so there will be constant parade of stars.
Lots of fun...
Re: Any welders on gs?
Where did you guys learn? I was looking at some schools in Chicago online but am not sure what the process of acquiring certification and stuff is. Do you go to school, work with someone as an apprentice, do the exams, and so on?
I am really interested in welding as an artistic form, as in making sculptures. Would be fun trying my hand at it. Aisha and OG, what / why did you weld? Where did you learn? And is it expensive in terms of tools and equipment and getting a workspace at home forit? Thanks.
Re: Any welders on gs?
what do you want to weld, and would you prefer the basic acetylene/oxygen combo or the electric arcing...
btw - a blowtorch and a leaf blower make an excellent BBQ starter - no fuss
Re: Any welders on gs?
Brute I have no idea. I don't know much about it. I would just like to take classes when I have time / money, get the proper certification, and set up whatever is easiest at home to muck about in my spare time.
Re: Any welders on gs?
I am not a great welder, I would rather work with wood than metal. However it is useful to be able to repair mechanical parts. You can rent electric welding equipment.
One of my best friends spent his whole life as an iron worker, he taught me, but he did lrage scale welding on beams and large building components. What is it you would like to do? Is this to do art, automotive, construction, or just to watch the pretty blue flame?
Re: Any welders on gs?
Art and construction. I want the option of knowing something that I can make money with if I ever want a part time job away from the white collar grind.
What's the best way to get started?
Re: Any welders on gs?
By the way, the first thing that jumps to mind when I think of welding and automative is motorcycles! What else would it involve? Sounds tempting. So much I want to learn!
Re: Any welders on gs?
u disappoint me Sarah…
never thought u’d be so materialistic to think of “art” and “learning” for the sole purpose of making money out of it…
always thought u were higher than that… ![]()
