Typically when you answer to a thread, there is a check box below your response window, which says "Email notification". By default it is unchecked. If you want to change the default to keep it on, then click on profile and go to "Edit Options". There is a yes/no option that says "Use 'Email Notification' by default?". By default that option is set at "No", however, if you switch it to "yes", you will get email notifications for any new replies to the threads you participate in. You can still use your personal profile to switch off notifications for threads you don't want to receive emails for or manually switch off the checkbox in your response window for threads where you don't want notifications.
