Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a number, you add up the total for Bismillah and it comes to 786.

I do not think 786 has any basis in Islam. I mean, bimillah are the words of Quran and I don't think any number can replace that. Having said that, I haven't come across any hadith, let alone Ayah, that says that 786 is the same as Bismillah.
