Hi guys! First of all i am studying in T.O, Canada and doing my undergrad in Public health science. I am thinking to change my major to biochemistry instead of publich health science this year. But before i make a decision which i have only limited amount of time, I want to get opinion from you people who are familiar with biology or chemistry job outlooks or who are currently in this field. From what I know, in Canada (this is where i am studying) and US, most good paid jobs in bio or chem requires atleast a master degree. I want to know what kind of jobs are available from just having a BSc degree in this field and what is the salary range? Is it better to stick to either biology or chemistry instead of doing biochem if I wish to apply for professional programs like pharmacy or medicine.
If you are planning to get into a medschool, any major is fine as long as you fulfill your pre-med requirements that is one yr. of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Organic Chem with lab and atleast one semester of Calculus. In fact in this day and age medical schools prefer major with liberal arts, Mathematics, or anything other than typical Biology or Chemistry. I 'll say stay with your public health major because opportunities for public health bachelors degree are far much more than the ones for Biology or Chemistry. Biochem is definitely a hard major, and job offers are mostly in the labs and you don't wanna end up with something that is limited to labs only unless and until you are really interested in it.
In the US, for pharmacy school you need to have an associate degree only and then you can take your PCAT, however, for medical school you need to have a bachelors degree and MCAT score. hopefully, it makes sense to you. :-)
Thanks alot for your reply Gemini…yeah the prereqs part of medicine, i will try to do them in the upcomin summer holidays as well as some night courses. I was also thinking to stay within my program because i really dont want to stay in a lab for da rest of my life. In canada, pharmacy also requires some prereqs but they r pretty much similar to med. Once again…thanks for ur advice :k: ![]()
I also had an interest in Biology. When I inquired about this major and the job prospects, my college professors would say its hard to find a job once you graduate with this degree, unless you do your Masters.
Some of my friends have a Biology and/or Chemistry degree and they are working in labs. They are thinking to do their Masters because they want their pay to increase, along with job satisfaction. But then again, there are always people who love what they do, even without having done a Masters. I would suggest you do a little research, especially in the Occupational Handbook at your local college library. They often provide career projection data, along with potential salaries, and the like. Talk to your advisors as that is what they are there for, and also get feedback from alumni that have graduated in the field. Insha'Allah you will make the best decision. smile
