Any experience of buying diamond from Damas Pakistan ??

What design, cut, quality, setting, ring/band are you looking at? I'm not sure of the place your referring to but buying from a wholesaler might be cheaper than retail. In the city I live in, we have an area in downtown that has a strip of diamond wholesalers. Not sure about in Pakistan... But it all depends on what you looking at and where.

Re: Any experience of buying diamond from Damas Pakistan ??

Damas Pakistan are retailers. and since we dont have much options for buying diamonds in Pakistan in terms of authentic sellers etc, i just wanted to ask should i even consider buying diamond from them at first place??

hey

I haven’t bought from damas but was looking into buying a diamond ring recently in Lahore and getting one from abroad wasn’t an option. looked into damas in quite a bit of detail. here’s what i know about them and diamond ring buying in pakistan in general**:

When i started looking, i didn’t get great reviews off forums regarding buying diamonds in pakistan (esp. solitaires). asked people in my extended family who’re into diamonds, but they all travel abroad regularly and buy from there.

My family has very limited experience with diamonds. However, my mom has a beautiful pair of diamond earrings by Damas that my dad got her from Dubai. Compared to her other diamond jewelry (a ring studded with small diamonds and a nose pin bought from New Era jewelers or someplace in Khi), the earrings have significantly brighter diamonds and a much higher production quality overall. They’re clearly in a different league.

Hence, Damas was the first brand I looked into, also since I’d seen their ads growing up :stuck_out_tongue: they have headquarters in Dubai and retail outlets around the globe. However, the Damas in Pakistan is a franchise which means the stores here are owned and run by some Pakistanis and not by the Damas company itself. If you go to Damas Jewellery (link) and look under Shops Overseas for Pakistan, it is listed as ‘under license’ and the branches are named “Les Exclusives” whereas I’ve never seen this name declared anywhere in the actual outlets here. I don’t know how this affects their gold and stone quality or their prices. Also don’t know how much of their jewelry is imported from Damas Dubai and how much is produced by them here.

An acquaintance in lahore bought a gold kara from them (without diamonds). When she showed it to her regular jeweler later, he said the gold wasn’t too good. Other consumers and jewelers also expressed the opinion to her that the gold quality at damas in pk isn’t up to par. She also said they have a weird resell policy (regarding gold products) and was adamant she wasn’t going to buy there again.

I’m pretty sure i looked at every single ring they had for sale in the shop when i visited, at both the m m alam and y block branches in Lahore (both with diamonds and without). A major problem was that most of their regular damas brand stuff was too ‘desi’ or boring for me. found some very pretty pieces in their Genero brand jewelry (ground floor of the y block outlet) which was mostly western style diamonds-in-white-gold stuff imported from Italy. they had just launched Genero as a new sub-brand and had a valentine’s sale (feb 2013) at 30% off. I shortlisted 2 rings, both with small diamonds (no solitaires) and, with the discount, they were priced at 60 or 80 grand each at the time.

a major priority for us was finding conflict free diamonds. when we asked the people at damas (both outlets), they were completely clueless about what it meant. a salesman said straight away, yes ma’am, they’re conflict free, then admitted a minute later to probing k he had no idea what it meant.

my** (unsolicited :)) **advice:

do your homework regarding diamonds before you make a purchase (unless you have somebody who really knows this stuff)! read up on the four Cs (color, cut, carat, clarity), especially if you’re looking into solitaires, and how diamonds are ranked according to these criteria. It’ll make it easier for you to compare stones and prices. To get an idea for prices abroad, you can look up jewelry on vendor websites and try forums / blogs where people are talking about engagement and wedding rings.

Also, if you’re in Lahore, pay a visit to Solitaire. They’re right across the road from the m m alam damas outlet. They’re also a UAE headquartered brand and that is a company retail outlet, not a franchise. They only do diamond jewelry and had a much greater variety than damas. They also have a great manager who is a trained gemologist and he was the one who dealt with me throughout. He was well-informed, courteous and attentive (NOT what I would say for the staff at damas at m m alam!). He was very patient with all my questions and answered them fully. He also claimed that their company guarantees the use of conflict free diamonds (that was the first question I asked when I walked in and he later told me that in all the years he’s run that shop, I’m the only person who ever has :P). Couldn’t do a straight forward comparison between the two at the time coz I only looked at solitaire rings at this shop, but got a feeling their prices were higher than Damas.

you may also find diamond rings at other jewelers who only kind of do it on the side. i’d advise you to steer clear even if they seem to have lower prices. the stones are important in a diamond ring. you have a better chance of getting a good quality stone and setting with a jeweler who has experience with diamonds. you do not want a stone to fall off 5 years down the road or something like that (we’ve had that happen with other stones in our rings).

I’m sorry this ended up being such a long post, but I remember how confused I felt when I was looking and wanted you to have the benefit of my experience. I hope this is helpful to you in some way.

Good luck and happy ring hunting!
