As per consensus the usual process of selecting a girl or Aproving the boy by the family of potentional match makers family at a tea party, by the elders in Desi comunities is getting out dated and generally looked down by young people.
Is there any alternate of this arrangement keeping in mind the conservative and traditional settings in Pakistan ? Any workable substitute ?
Re: Any alternate of conventional 'Rishta process'
I have always been pushing youth organizations in the community to get more active on this issue. There needs to be more youth organizations (through universities, etc) that organize socials for general purposes, volunteer activities, leadership opportunities, community outreach programs, etc. That way, you do a lot for your community and deen, and also, lots of people get to know one another thru these mediums. Islamic lectures, dars' etc should be co-ed. At our university, we would have a weekly Islamic "reflections" lecture after Friday prayer - we would get together, girls and guys, sit in a circle and have a dynamic debate/discussion on a particular topic. We each did research, or pseudo-research on the topic, came with questions etc and educational materials and just talked about a topic.
It was a great way to get into other peoples' heads. I for one, found out that I didn't want to get into ANYTHING with those guys, after I heard the crap coming out of their heads. :D I even had a crush on one of them, but then when I heard his views, I was like huh??
