Re: Anti-Depressants
really bad
Effexor XR.
Well I need an explanation of how "bad".
help your self :k: link
Yea yea i've googled on it too. I need to know from people who've used anti-depressants themselves or know of others that have.
>>How "bad" are they for you?<<
Pretty bad, but everyone will give you a different answer. Side-effects can vary from headaches to something much more serious. But besides side-effects, even if you start to feel 'better' and want to get off them, you can't immediately stop taking them - you have to gradually lower your intake with your doctor's approval meaning that if you were taking 2 a day, then you have to continue taking 2 a day for at least two weeks even if you are feeling 'better'. i've read about the possibility of getting 'addicted' to them, i dunno how accurate that is. Of course, your doctor would/should work with you in helping to find a program that suits your personal requirements, and would help you get off them gradually.... but still, the combination of side-effects+possibility of getting 'used' to taking them... makes them not truly worth it unless one is truly in an extreme situation.
Just my personal op.
Oh yeah Nadia I know about that. Just wanted to know if it can result in hair loss or stuff like that :D
Okay, that and some of the more seroius stuff.
heh... yeah, hair loss, headaches, dizziness, irritability ---> these are the non-serious conditions.
It differs from person to person and obviously the effects of the anti-depressant upon each individual will be different...but i think, generally speaking, you can expect at least some sort of negative effect. But hey - some people might feel that the negative effect/s is balanced out by the advantages they gain over the long-term so who knows.
i was given anti depressants once in my life * i dont think i needed em at all…
but those tablets made me so depressed it became impossible for me to sleep, used to be up all night, gave me insomnia literally n i lost my appetite completely. it was terrible.

Re: Anti-Depressants
Prescribed or not prescribed, they have various side effects just like other medications but these side effects may continue to effect your moods for the rest of your life or may alter your personality completely in a "not to positive" way. Side effects may include anxiety, memory loss (long or short term), appetite loss or loss of your natural desires, absent mindedness.
It's always best to go for natural remedies (eg; herbs, etc.) to avoid complicaions. Medications should only be opted for if there is no other option available.
I recommend avoiding them.

this thread makes me depress
Antidepressants can work pretty effectively when taken under close medical supervision.
If you've already looked into alternatives eg St Johns Wort, counselling, Light theraphy etc (depending on the extent of depression) then maybe antidepressants are worth a try.
St John wort is given high marks because it involves minimum side effects and is contraindicated in less cases. Personally like Shahreen said medicine is the last resort and should be used only in extreme cases.
