WASHINGTON: As Benazir Bhutto gets ready to end her long exile and return to Pakistan, the tomb of her father, Zaulfikar Ali Bhutto, at Naodero is in a state of disrepair — its marble floors chipped and its peeling walls spray-painted with anti-Benazir graffiti, according to a report in Time magazine. The report quotes Mumtaz Ali Bhutto, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s first cousin and close friend and one of Benazir’s critics, as saying, “She has disgraced the Bhutto name.” He said her self-imposed exile in London and Dubai was an attempt to escape her sins. “The stigma will stay forever.” The tomb’s custodian, Muhammad Issa, told the Time reporter, “We will whitewash the walls before she returns.”

Only 4,000 people turned up from Larkana district of over 2 million people.

What a pathetic turnout. The Time article was right then, she is pretty well hated by a lot of people in her home town and centre of the Bhutto dynasty as well. How humiliating. Now wonder the “Daughter of the East” (or is it West now?) is busy cutting deals with the Generals and kissing upto the American’s to get a slice of power again. She dosen’t quite trust the people power anymore.

Same thing will happen in Punjab. This time may be in NWFP and Baluchistan too. She is a politician and she knows where and when to use ZAB's name, she will sweep the votes every where particularly in Sindh and Punjab.

Wrong. Vote bank of BB/ZAB was/is/ and always will be down trodden poor masses. MQM perhaps will never understand that logic. And yes there is always some support from NWFP and Baluchistan too. This time may be she gets even more seats due to turmoil particularly in NWFP and Mullahs failure in both the provinces. Wait and See

I dun give a damn about MQM because I dun support ghundays anyway... but it's a fact that PPP gets a good chunk of votebank due to Feudalism... only if the people of Pakistan get education to understand right from wrong than Shakhsiat parasti. Take Benazir or any of her relative out of equation from the PPP and see the result.

Sorry about misunderstanding. PPP is generally considered to be party of poor people. There are lots of MNAs and MPAs who work very hard in their constituencies to serve their people, whether they are waderas or choudhries or what ever. Since they are elected by peoples' votes, they always come to their respresntatives' places and get their work done. In other words, these elected people listen to their grievances irrespective of their ethnic or religion orientation. Unfortunately which is not the case in other governments whether lotas or dictators. Because they are not answerable to any one. That is why PPP has always a largest bank vote. On top of that ZAB is a big bonus for PPP. This has nothing to do with education.

You can say that about Sindh but certainly not Punjab. Punjab is the only province where voters have voted outside of their ethnicity and the PPP has formed a Govt over there in the past. Even Shujaat and Pervez Elahi, local boys, will have a hard time winning this election, as evident by the lacklustre number that showed up in mandu buahauddin their constituency, and I am almost sure elahi must have offered Rs. 500 per person for showing up.

Out of punjab, I think Lahories are more open minded and fun people. In general, people in punjab enjoy a better quality life than other provinces, a fact even mentioned by Imran Khan in 1997, when he was building up his political party. Since punjab holds most of country resources, people in punjab do not feel the kind of insecurity others have. This, leads to being more ethnic or nationalist. Nothing personal, just stating some facts.

Yep, it's a fact that the PPP vote-bank is/was largely concentrated in interior Sindh and lower Punjab (the seraiki belt), because these area's are still shackled to feudalism. A lot Sindhi/Seraiki feudals are nothing but the greatest terrorists in Pakistan - extortion, kidnapping, victimisation, torture, murder, enforced labour, private prisons holding thousands and every crime under the sun. This is how the wadera / feudals ensure that the "people's vote" goes to the PPP.
Thankfully over the last 5 years with a freer media and more development, the people of these area's are daring to break away from the shackles of the feudals. That is why BB got such a lousy reception in Larkana where only 0.2 % of people came out to see her, especially after why graffiti against her was found on her father's grave. No wonder she is now using American patronage, wheeling dealing with the generals, as well sucking upto the MQM to grab power at any cost.
