"Anti-American" Americans

A nice primer on how to analyze questionable criticism of U.S. actions/inactions or policies. Thank you.

Nadia writes:
“Alright sorry, so you are stating that each of the “domestic Blame America Firsters” believe that the US is the most benevolent country on earth, while each of the non-domestic group believes it is not?”
That is not at all what I said. Please read it again. I said “most” domestic Blame America Firsters hold certain beliefs which could broadly be lumped together as love of country. Those I would label as “Anti-American” (whether domestic or foreign) do not have this underlying feeling which moderates their criticism.

Nadia writes:
“not all of us non-domestic Blame parties are anti-American or draw upon our criticisms from a foundation of anti-Americanism.”

I never suggested that “all” non-domestic Blame parties (with whom you seem to have lumped yourself) are “anti-American.” Your last comment is pretty much how I see it: i.e. “Can it be possible that all anti-Americans are critics of the US govt., but all critics of the US govt. are not anti-American?” Absolutely right. And I have tried to explain to you the methodology I use in deciding whether to categorize such “Blame parties” as anti-American or not.

In my above post I said, “It is really not too difficult to identify those who harbor an inherent antipathy and hatred for America if you read their writings and/or listen to their rantings for any length of time.” OG is much more succinct when he says, “I find it hard to describe Anti-Americanism, but I know it when I see it.” I think OhioGuy’s post does a great job discussing this issue.

If you find yourself identifying real closely with the things that OG and/or I have said, perhaps you are “anti-American” (as defined and perceived by Americans) without even knowing it. At the same time, you may not be anti-American as defined and perceived by yourself and other non-Americans. Frankly, I don’t think you should really concern yourself too much about how you are perceived. You believe what you believe and I seriously doubt you would change any of your beliefs based upon how someone else perceives you.

If you are “anti-American,” you are the nicest anti-American that I have had the pleasure of speaking with. :flower1:

I took N's. essay title to mean the total opposite.

Reason is because so many countries are Anti-American. They don't usually witness volly (disagreement) against the government. Some may probobly never even hear of it.

But because those hollywood personalities speak up. Many more hear.

120 or so hollywood signatures seem to create more notice than.. 5000 peace activists.

I for one was impressed that Sean Penn (BAD BOY) took a trip to Bagdad to see for himself whats up. I thought..good for you. I liked the simple words he wrote. Something on the order of not being afraid to speak up.

I don't understand why more people don't ask GBJ for concrete evidence against Iraq. Where is the concrete evidence?

And if they want to wage war.. Moral thing to do is show concrete evidence. Where is it?

I don't understand why more people don't ask themselves how is it that we allow these few men in goverment to legalize so much power for themselves. And I blame democrats too. ..(though they are a bit stimied in congress now..bad news that.)

John Ashcroft IMO is comparible to that wierdo FBI chief who kept files on people..

What happend to We the People?

Doesn't that scare you? Frightens me.
