786
Asalaamu alaikum Asif Bhai,
What is '786'?
Dear Sakinah ji :)
The ulama of islam have a science called abjaad. This is that every letter of the arabic alphabet is assigned a different value for example alif = 1, baa == 2, etc. some letters == 10, etc etc. anyway in the phrase bismillah ar-rahman ar-raheem if you total the numerical values of all the letters in it you get a sum of 786.
In other words, 786 is a shorthand way of writing bismillah ar-rahman ar-raheem.
it is v. useful in letters etc. which will be read and thrown away as it means that the holy phrase wont be disrespected.
wallahu aalam.
hope that helps!
:)

Asalaamu alaikum Asif Bhai,
Thank you for your response.
Another question if I may...
Did our Rasool (Salallaahu alayheee wasalaam) and/or His (SAW)'s companions(Radi Allahu'anhum) use this form of abbreviation?
Sakinah ji,
I do not think so. but there are many things we take for granted now eg the books of fiqh, classified hadith texts, qur'an in book form, zabar and zer's on the qur'anic words etc etc etc which are necessary to understand the deen of Our Prophet [sal allahu alayhi wa sallam] and his companions;
Huzoor kay zamaane mein to arabic numerals bhi nahin thay to kya aaj kal hum yeh bhi na isitmaal karein? at that time there was none of the islamic sciences either---you see my point? this abjaad system is not a wajib part of the deen but rather a scholastic tool useful in some situations. Obviously it is not the intention to 'replace' the actual words with these during worship!
Allah knows best!
Asallaamu alaikum Asif Bhai,
I pray you are well, Ameen.
I am still a little confused as to the basis of this type of abbreviation.
My view is that this appears to be extremism in the Deen and contrary to the authentic Sunnah of our Prophet (Salallaahu alayhee wasallam). And Allah Knows Best.
The reason I say this is because we know (and evidence of this can be provided on request) that our Rasool (salallaahu alayhee wasallam) wrote letters to the Kufaar such as the King of Rome, inviting them to embrace Islaam. These letters included "Bismillah" and Ayahs from the Qur'aan.
What the kuffar did with these letters, Allah alone Knows. Had the 'disrespectful disposal' of these letters been a concern of our Prophet (salallaahu alayhee wasallam) surely He (salallaahu alayhee wasallam) would not have sent these to them?
And Allah Knows best.
Far be it for me to make judgements on the 'Ulema' who practise the science of 'Abjaad' (and this is not my intention here) but are they not acting firstly, contrary to the Sunnah of the Messenger (Salallahu alayhee wasallam) and therefore claiming to know better and secondly, in extreme, by this concern of theirs about what the end of these bits of paper is?
With due respect, is this 'science' not simply a waste of time?
And Allah Knows best.
May Allah guide us all to the truth and forgive us our shortcomings, Ameen.
