That is very believable - The probably tried to target the cockpit as their main target but perhaps due to the speed of the plane (which they probably underestimated) even at the low speed was little too quick and they ended up spraying the bullets at the plane body which caused the fatality.
The reason they would be more interested in targeting cockpit is because if you take out the pilot in the middle of his landing it will cause the plane to not being able to land in a controlled manner, even if the pilot doesn’t die with the bullet wounds, then the panic that he might undergo through might cause him to take an reflex or evasive action (while still being in the crucial process of the final few seconds of landing) which may result in involuntary hand movement while hands are on the Tiller or involuntary foot movements on rudder pedals - which could potentially result into
A) A minor change in landing path that might not be recoverable in the short time available (Perhaps just seconds)
b) Plane not being able to control landing and ending up overrunning the runway and causing damage to airport structure.
In both scenarios - the damage would be ‘very spectacular’ in the eyes of the terrorists and they will be able to present a display of ‘what they can do in Pak’ to the rest of the world.
Above is the reason I think it (may have been) a very well planned act of terrorism which luckily didnt go acc to the plan.
