**Glory to God, Who created in pairs all things that the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind and (other) things of which they have no knowledge. **
Shakir translation:
**Glory be to Him Who created pairs of all things, of what the earth grows, and of their kind and of what they do not know. **
Pickthall translation:
**Glory be to Him Who created all the sexual pairs, of that which the earth groweth, and of themselves, and of that which they know not! **
This is also from Surah Yasin…So at the time of the Prophet :saw:, what other things were there that were made in pairs that people had no knowledge of? Okay, so they knew that all animals were created in pairs, fine. They surely knew all plants were created in pairs…Pollinating the plants was a normal practice in the Prophet :saw:'s time. What else could there be no knowledge of?
Electrons and Protons? Positivity and negativity? The negative and positive pulls of the power of gravity? Meiosis and mitosis in germs and bacteria? Notice, specifically the Pickthall translation, “Glory be to Him Who created pairs of all things”…All things meaning everything…
Today, due to electron accelerators, radiography, electron microscopes and all the tools at our disposal, we see that indeed, the very fabric of the universe, matter, is composed of negative and positive forces…
The process of replication in unicellular organisms is called mitosis, and even in mitosis the cells replicate at a chromosomal level in pairs…Here is a great multimedia presentation of it…
of course, when cells divide into two, they split into pairs. this isnt what the original post hinted at though.
if you think of electron and proton, arent you forgetting an equally essential part of matter - the neutron? and this is forgetting a couple of dozen other subatomic particles.
gravity has no negative pull - it's always attractive.
meiosis and mitosis arent even duals - meiosis is something that happens only in gametes, mitosis is for somatic cells.
^^ You are going into semantics…Keep in mind the key word, parable…
Which brings us to: Is ‘dark’ really dark or the absence of light or is ‘cold’ really cold or the absence of heat…
Quran is not a book of science, and as mentioned previously, if it set out to explain in detail every little nook and cranny of science, it would be a book the size of which will not fit in your house…
Bottomline is, we draw conclusions from a statement based on our own prejudices and knowledge…When the Quran states about everything being in pairs, it’s not going to go into the fact saying “when protons are bombarded with electrons there is a reaction by which a neutron or a third atomic particle is formed”…Give me a break…
And as for neutrons, they themselves are formed by the collision of protons and electrons, and even after being formed they move to a state of proton…(Thank god for internet)
in which case, its just a parable. attributing extra merit to it is entirely your own innovation.

haha this is bull crap. every atom has neutrons in its nucleus, except for the hydrogen nucleus. neutron stars are composed entirely of neutrons with their exclusion principle balancing gravitational collapse. neutrons are as integral to matter as electrons and protons are, and just as distinct too.

Yes, It's a parable, but how strong a parable? If I make a statement that particle is made of cheese, how hard would it be by today's standards to disprove it? Not very I assume...
And it's not as if the Quran is saying that everything is made of 3 or 4 or 5 things, but distinctly mentions pairs...Now disprove this theory by holding a positive and a negative wire coming out of your electrical socket...:D
dude, what you have quoted is nuclear fusion as happens in the sun. the issue here is, you dont even know what you are trying to justify. :hehe:
if it makes you happy to think everything comes in pairs, please do. most people know better.
and just since you mentioned positive and negative wires, your house wiring is AC - neither wire is positive or negative. in fact, the mains is a three phase connection, with three wires, all of which are arguably positive or negative or neither.
Laj: good post. But one point of concern from my side: mitosis is indeed to create two things out of two. But meiosis isn't that exactly. Meiosis is exactly the other thing: to create one out of two
While the original post was more in tune to Religion forum... the way the discussion has progressed, makes me wonder if perhaps the Science & Technology forum will be more suited for such arguments. Help me understand guys, are you discussing quran, or are you arguing about science? Or both?
