While we have heard about many instances of an on screen hero emulating it in real life there has been no independent confirmation of it , like Hrithik saving Subhash Ghai and Vivek saving the life of a truck driver in Delhi. One person who has done it for real is Akshay Kumar and he proved yet again that he’s not just a hero on the screen but off it too, having saved Lara Dutta in South Africa and then rescuing Aishwarya on the sets of Khakee (the witness to the act being none other than Amitabh himself).
Here is the latest. The Andaaz hero was in Delhi from where he was scheduled to fly to Calcutta by an early morning flight on 24th April to attend a press conference of the film there. But heroine Priyanka Chopra, producer Suneel Darshan and director Raj Kanwar realised at the airport about 30 minutes before take-off time that Akshay was missing.
Phone calls to his hotel room went unattended as our hero was in deep slumber. The hotel staff had been instructed to wake up everybody except Akshay at 4 a.m. because the action hero is up a early otherwise too. However, Akshay overslept that morning and would’ve missed the flight -and, consequently, the press conference in Calcutta too! For, the earliest next flight was late in the evening.
Luckily for the panicking producer, Akshay woke up about 20 minutes before the aeroplane’s departure and barely managed to get out of his night suit and into a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. Asking his driver to shift to the adjacent seat, he took the wheel. To Darshan’s joy and the poor driver’s dismay, Akshay drove at a prohibitively crazy speed and reached the airport just three minutes before the take-off time. The co-operative airlines staff let him board the flight.
