Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

I bought these:

Bed Bath and Beyond - Twin Bake & Serve Food Warmer customer reviews - product reviews - read top consumer ratings

they’re not too bulky and you just have to put tealights underneath. I was surprised that my food was actually boiling with these on.

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

Lafuria , I have something to confess .. you know the grill stand that you get with the microwave? well I place my larger pot on it and and light the tea candles under it .. it serves the purpose !

infact one of my friends has this thing , problem starts when you are placing it on the table .. if there is a thin plastic sheet on the table , then that gets damaged due to the heat :( ... When I use it , I use it on my stone worktop .. that I know wont get ruined due to the heat of the candles ..

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

omg......say it isn't so!!!
tell me you don't have a plastic sheet on your dining table.......

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

so much work to keep the food warm? honestly, i've never really cared if my food is steaming hot at a dawat. it tastes good regardless as long as you are in company of good friends.
I personally prefer to serve and sit down to have good conversations with my guests. I alway felt that food is just an excuse to meet up and enjoy each other's company. It doesn't have to be absolutely perfect for a successful dawat. maybe i think wrong?

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

^no....you're not wrong....and yes, we enjoy each other's company too when we have dawats but after going to so much trouble to make the food for our guests, we want it to be at an optimum temperature to be enjoyed......

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

I do Muzna :( .. I had to have it , but I have it in style .. initially I didnt have it and some of the guests I had made innumerable scratches on my Glass table and I hated that ..

so then I changed my strategy .. I think I have a pic .. take a look .. I cut it exactly the shape of the table top and let the two shorter sides remain so that it wont slip and it doesnt ...

Ignore the cake .. take a look .. I have this runner and cloth chosen all with special effort :@:

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

haha how inventive. This thing might work well for you then because it has a little container for the tealights so it shouldn't really heat up anything else other than the ceramic pot on top.

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

Hmm Lafuria , may be a silicone mat .. I thought of it , will try it out :hmmm:

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

The cake is sooo bright and festive I can't look past it!

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

Sorry Raania, I had baked it for my husband and he had specifically asked for a colorful one :cb: I think he was pulling my leg , but I had to do it to prove that I care !

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

okay.....that really is a plastic sheet with style......
you are forgiven.

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

Phew .. If it looks tacky you can tell me you know .. I genuinely gave it two months of thought before I had that sheet , tablecloth and the runners :cb:

The only thing i seriously dislike about plastic sheets it when it hangs aimlessly down the sides .. and I feel cutting it the exact shape of the table really did sort that tackiness out :hmmm:

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

well....in this case it looks more like a "protector" than a cover......so its kind of okay.......
still would prefer an alternative but until such time as one becomes available, you have permission.

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

lol .. yes you are right , its more like a protector … and I am never ever gonna buy a glass table ever in my life again :cb:

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

we've only ever had glass tables.....hubby is just taken by them.....and frankly I've never objected because I like the look of our custom designed one......but they are murder to keep scratch free!!!

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

I know Muzna and it hurts so much to see even a single scratch :( its not like one is going to change dining tables every other day ! and i hate it when things start looking shabby ..

Families with kids are specially really hard to manage on a glass dining table .. nothing could protect my table, not even place mats and thats when I realized, if i had gone for a wood table perhaps I wouldnt have had to go through this hassle .. but then it wouldnt have looked half as classy as this glass one !

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

Food warmed up in the microwave does go cold quicker. So I also warm it on the stove or put it on 100c in the oven. That thing Stoppit linked, I actually got last month and it is quite good. The tea lights do keep the food slightly warm. I don't know if you have the shop 'Collectables' near you, but they are on sale there! :)

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

I’ve seen some people use this kind of thing, which I think also works well. Crock-Pot SCLBC300-BS Three 1-1/2-Quart Trio Buffet Cooker, Stainless Steel and Black: Amazon.com: Kitchen & Dining

Most of the time, though, I see the regular chafing dishes.

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

How about putting a medium size serving bowl on a tea warmer and having another bowl at low heat in the oven? They use tealights also but they tend to be enclosed so are safer with kids. The one I use is around 6-7 inches in diameter.

Re: Another of those Dawat Etiquette questions ..

if i ever have my way, i will abolish the 'da'vat' system at home...i would be much more relaxed and enjoy more the company i intend to invite if i invited them ALL at a restaurant. i hate everything that goes with the parties...mainly pre-da'vat cleaning, cooking, post-da'vat cleaning!!!!!!!!!!!! ufff, too much work. i'm saying that because i wouldn't want my wife to work so hard for something which has an alternative...
