I would like to give the credit to the Zardari led Govt. They actually fired him, the way Salman Farooqi reacted is highly appreciated, govt need to maintain this kind of ZARF and should operate on merit...

Evere country is operated by different mafias, earlier they we used to call them king-makers now they are called mafias, however these can be controlled if one have compatible ministers in place... appointing likes of Rehman Malik would result in weak govt and strong mafia

Dr Basit says propaganda being launched against him

ISLAMABAD: The doctorate degree of Dr Abdul Basit, the lawyer who has been sacked in the 18th Amendment case in the Supreme Court, has been disowned by Yale Law School of the USA, the university from where the counsel claims to have obtained the degree, documents available with The News reveal. Basit, who came into the limelight recently had threatened to file a reference against the chief justice of Pakistan. He is yet another fake doctor in the government camp after the law minister who writes the word doctor with his name despite his doctorate degree being fake.

According to documents available with The News, Dr Basit claims to have completed his Doctor of Science of Law (J.S.D.) degree from the famous Yale Law School, USA and writes JSD degree with his name. Even the Punjab University’s prospectus carries the same degree with his name where he is a legal advisor.

In 2003 a complainant M A Raoof had filed a complaint with the Punjab Bar Council that Dr A Basit has submitted false documents in the council and action be taken against him. An email of Judith Calvert, Registrar Yale Law School dated 10 July, 2003 was also attached with the complaint which read: “This message will confirm that Abdul Basit received the degree of Master of Laws (LL.M) from Yale Law School in June 1964. Mr Basit was accepted into the Doctor of the Science of Law (J.S.D.) student at Yale Law School during the 1964-1965 academic year. He did not complete the J.S.D. degree.”

The email also stated that it cannot be confirmed whether Basit was ever enrolled in any PhD programme at Yale University. The Punjab Bar Council got the contents of the email confirmed from Yale Law School on 7 July, 2004.

The then Vice Chairman PBC, Tanveer-ur-Rehman Randhawa, vide order dated 20-9-2004 cancelled the licence of Dr A Basit for providing wrong information to the council when he applied for the issuance of license to practice.

The order also proposed lodging of a complaint against Dr A Basit for committing fraud and forgery. Another complaint was filed against Dr Basit in Pakistan Bar Council where Basit was allowed to practice law for having a genuine law graduation degree.

Dr A Basit when contacted for his comments said that Punjab Bar Council had proceeded one-sided against him and the order of cancellation of his licence was turned down. “This propaganda against me is being disseminated at the behest of Hamid Khan (a senior leader of lawyers’ movement)”, said Basit when questioned about Yale Law School’s confirmation about his degree. He added, “I have written a book on a minority and no member of that minority accepts my doctorate.”

When asked whether he possesses a JSD degree which he mentions with his name, Dr Basit replied, “I am not bound to answer your questions as you are not an interrogator”. When told about the confirmations from Yale Law School that he did not complete JSD degree, Dr Basit said, “There is no such document.”

Basit is also defending eight PCO judges in the apex court in their review petitions along with Naeem Bokhari. These eight PCO judges who fell in line with the likes of Justice (R) Dogar are facing contempt notices from the Supreme Court for violating the eight-member bench’s order passed on November 3, 2007 which barred all judges of superior judiciary from taking oath under Musharraf’s unconstitutional PCO.
