The explosion struck a mosque next to local police headquarters in Lower Dir district, the focus of a spring military offensive to oust militants advancing closer towards the capital Islamabad.
Muhammad Idrees Khan, deputy inspector general of police in Lower Dir, told AFP that the blast hit a mosque next to local police headquarters.
‘Now it has been confirmed that it was a suicide attack. The bomber was riding a car and he rammed his car into the outer gate of the mosque,’ he said.
Local television showed images of a huge plume of smoke rising from a small town in the mountains, while charred cars smoldered beside the blast site.
‘We have received three more dead bodies taking the death toll to 11. There are 29 injured people with us, some of them in a critical condition,’ said Doctor Wakeel Mohammad Khan, head of main hospital in Lower Dir.
‘The local residents told me that some more dead bodies are laying in the houses — we have declared an emergency in the hospital.’
The injured included children, he added, but officials were unable to say how many police were killed or wounded in the attack.
More than 2,700 people have been killed in attacks in Pakistan since July 2007, with the past three months seeing a surge in suicide bombings targeting civilian and security targets by militants avenging the army onslaught.—AFP

LAKKI MARWAT: The district nazim of Lakki Marwat and his family members narrowly escaped a suicide attack in Isakkhel village here on Thursday as the bomber slipped and his jacket exploded prematurely, killing no one but himself.
Eyewitnesses and police said that District Nazim Qudratullah Khan was sitting in his hujra among a large number of people when the suicide bomber tried to target him.
‘It was a suicide attack,’ DPO Mohammad Ayub told Dawn. He said the bomber entered the hujra and was trying to approach the nazim, but luckily his foot slipped and he fell down. The explosives tied to his body went off, he said.
The district police chief said that they had found head and legs of the bomber. Police took the body parts into custody and sent them for test. He said that only a part of the suicide jacket exploded, while explosive wires, packet of knives and hand grenade were recovered from the killed attacker.
He said if the suicide vest exploded completely there would be huge losses of lives as more than 60 people were present in the hujra at the time of explosion.
The DPO said that a stone was also recovered from the attacker. The name of the village ‘Isakkhel’ was inscribed on the stone which indicated that the family members of the district nazim were the apparent target, he added.
The father of the district nazim, Haji Mohammad Aslam, a key member of Marwat Qaumi Jirga, brother Haji Hidayatullah Khan and other family members besides the nazim himself were present in the hujra to receive government officials and other guests, who had come to congratulate the nazim and his brother on performing Haj.
It may be recalled that former member of National Assembly and key leader of Marwat Qaumi Jirga, Naseer Mohammad Khan, was injured in a bomb blast in the area few days ago.

Isn’t high time that all Islamic parties should be banned and word Islam is expunged from constitution of Pakistan. Islam ko buhut ziadah zalil kya hay, khuda ke liaya is peaceful mazhab ko ab to buksh do.
Not the islamic parties only but all need to clear which side they are . To the killers ( Mumtaz qadri’s side ) or the the common ppl’s side.
Every such incident increases the feeling of insecurity with in us.

We cannot stop small country like BD to hang JI leaders for their crimes in 1970’s and we are thinking to divide india. Those days are gone and are no more. The game which we started has been taken up by others and now they are playing the same game on our soil. Had we not started this game , we may have been much better in shape as of now.
I am not saying htey have done these crimes. These are allegations put on them which may or maynot be correct . But in 1973 BD act for this issue made whole sale cleaning . In 2009 BD parliament made changes in that act in live the old issues to kill political opponents. Y we dont have much voice to stop them. Or no one is serious about the issue including JI PK ..
