Another French film

Ok they’re at it again. The latest film to come under the scrutiny of the BBFC, Irreversible, has a nine minute rape scene and supposedly one of the most brutal killings in film history ( a man gets battered to death with a fire extinguisher).

I don’t know if I’m missing something, but is it really necessary to have this sort of stuff in a film? The argument goes that this isn’t meant to titillate and is depicted in a serious way which shows that rape is horrible. And presumably you should sit through a nine minute scene just in case you weren’t aware of it.

9 MINUTES  DAYAM! thats too long.

What is the name? I want to see it now, especially that brutal killing.

They wouldn't have put it if people didn't enjoy it!

LM, it's called Irreversible.

Maddy, that's a good point. It's a good way of getting people to pay for a movie they'd probably never watch in a million years otherwise.

Let me find out a bit more about this loser Director...

I have been surprised a few times like that aswell. Has anyone seen Monster's Ball? In that movie, aparticular scene has a extremely graphic sexual act, about 3 minutes long. Guess where I saw it.......transatlantic flight between NY and London. The carrier....BA. A lot of people were watching it, including some kids on the flight.

Chaltahai, I can understand if Europeans are sexually more open than Americans, etc. but they need to be considerate as well. I mean like you're saying, kids on the British Airways flight were watching the film too with the graphic sex scene. Where do we draw the line??? Next thing you know, they'll be putting on a live show for the passengers! :o

I've never seen Monster's Ball but I don't know how it got shown in a flight where there will be kids around if it's as graphic as you say. Sounds like a pretty stupid policy to me, otherwise why bother with ratings in the first place?

As for Irreversible, seems like the BBFC are going to pass the movie for cinema release but might not approve it for video which seems to be a contradiction of sorts. They are clearly a bit muddled over this one. The French are psychos.

did anyone see 8MM..i was amazed to see that movie....this world is just full of sick ppl

Mr X, you should know by now that French movies have more ooh-ing and aah-ing in them than actual dialogue. I have a feeling you rather enjoy *les filmes francaise, n'est ce pas? * Why else would you keep watching them.

Actually I've never seen one apart from as a kid and that one had plenty of oohing and aahing and it was shown on tv.

This stuff is altogether more brutal which i'd find a bit harder to stomach.

BTW, how do you know they’ve got more oohing and aahing in them :hehe:

I can understand it being difficult to accept the copious amounts of sex and violence that we seem to get these days. However if you really want a worthy cause to champion, how about getting rid of that touch-feely Dawson's Creek drivel that I seem to get twice a week? That's a travesty, if ever I saw one.

Just my humble opinion.

Stop looking at kids , while watching such movies.:)

What's Dawson's Creek - and more importantly, why do you need to sit through it twice a week? Watch it while helping Mum peel the potatoes do we? :)

To be honest, I am not quite sure what it is, as I can never make sense of the plot. Needless to say it's fully of touchy-feely tree-hugging new-millennium American teenagers discovering their inner selves in-between frequent childish crushes, falling outs and deep meaningful looks.

I'm not quite sure why I watch it. It seems to be quite popular here so maybe it's a necessary (albeit unpleasant) step in my journey towards assimilating into American daily life.

Nothing beats Coronation Street though.

Believe it or not kids but that's how things are in real life. We may choose to look away, hide, twist or deny the reality but the truth is people do get raped and yes everybody does have sex at one point or another. I find it funny when in Indian movies the hero comes within inches of heroine's lips and dives somewhere else at the last minute. It's all about preserving innocense and don't ask don't tell theory. It's the directors vision and what he wants to portray in the movie. If it's a painful rape scene then he may want us to feel the brutality and pain inflicted on the victim. Let's not kidd ourselves, and start seeing life's twisted reality as it happens, no matter how gruelsome.

That's just my view and I am sticking to it!
