There are moments when I think these natural disasters are happening cause of the fact that we, humans, are really messing up the environment. I think in the future, we will be seeing a lot more storms, hurricaines and natural disasters in general.

^ Or maybe we're entering the age where we're noticing them more. Honestly, I never used to pay much attention to this sorta thing until the recent Asian Tsnuami happened.

Perhaps you are right PCG. With all the media attention on various natural disasters that are happening across the world, it's easier for us to be aware of what is going on around us.
In any case, may Allah help those in need, and inshallah, aid will get to the victims of such tragedies sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately, there are more and more devastating events like these occurring more then ever before, but perhaps a really big one has to happen before we all pay attention
