Do you know of anyone who has suffered from it? I had a friend at school who did and it was such a debilitating mental illness for her. All she could think about was food and how to avoid it.
Also, I have noticed that alot of Pakistani women are so obsessed with their weight (i guess it’s women in general) and the craze of size zero in Bollywood is beginning to affect the perception teenage girls are having of themselves.
What can we do to tackle this problem? apart from educating girls about lack of self-esteem and weight issues?
Its the beauty magazines. TV ads, tv shows and even news presenters. Women watch them and think that this is the standard for todays women. On top of everything its the little knowledge they have which makes them think that eating very low and lowest weight is the solution. Eventually someday these ladies going to eat right (assuming and Godforbid they dont die or receive any permanent physical problem) again and they gonna get all the weight back.
there are alot of rehabilitation centers and other sort of clinics for these kind of problem. But unfortunately here in Pakistan there are none which is the biggest problem. The only solution is good knowledge....
people are not considering the long term damage, they are jst trying to look good in the here and now..well that wont matter when your older..and by then the damage will be done...not eating appropriately and not eating enough leads to all kinds of ilnesses and when your ill, nothing matters..even the way u look. As a result of anorexia u can get osteoporosis..ur bones literally start crumbling...some women also become infertile..these are really high risks..we can try our best to educate but people still dont tend to listen, with mass media having such a great influence..i think people are going to learn the hard way
I think our fashion industry plays a big role here...models are super thin and clothes are specifically designed for super thin frames.
Its really a shame because women are beautiful in all shapes and sizes but the majority of teens and young women dont see that. They want to believe Cosmo and Elle and be like a stick. And they will do anything to get there. :(
I have always been a 'binge eater' sometimes i would eat loads, Next few days barely nothing. It's awful. But as i left school started college i was fine. Until now i am feeling so much pressure, about a year ago i was a perfect size 10 Could fit into 8 too. Now i have gain'd weight and im a size 12 sometimes 14. Breasts have enlargened etc. I was happy that i've gain'd weight people been saying i look healthier etc. Until my aunty came frm america and hasnt stopped commenting on my weight saying i need *to lose weight. I was so shocked at first, I mean how can you just say that to someone?! But as i heard it on a daily basis that im 'too fat' and if i walked pass her she would say 'motto.. *smile' I am absoloutly appauled i told my dad what she was saying obviously he said ignore her! But now everytime i look in the mirror i just see 'fat' Where as before i saw a lovely curvy girl. She has really messed with my mind, However now thank the Lord shes gone back, Im sort of just watching what i eat, I mean i wouldnt mind going back to a size 10 but i mean c'mon 12-14 surely im not *that fat *where she feels the need to call me FAT!
honestly these aunties and un ki slim or as the call it smart betian and when they can't stop commenting that beta is umar main larkion ko active rehna chahiye bla bla bla honestly, i have stopped going anywhere and i get so upset after all these comments...
i am also size 12-14 and ppl genuinly do always comment that i am looking pretty, nice hair, nice this nice that but some ppl can't just stop pointing out the negative crap....and i honestly feel like puking when i see dere daughters whose bones are litterally sticking out and they look soooooooooooooooooooo weak and you are like...gosh where do dere internal organs actually fit!!!
anyways what was the topic again? anorexia hmm...well i just started studying about it about it....and we looked at some vdo's and gosh...ppl need to get dere brain sorted out here...!! but again can't blame them as its a mental disorder....anyways, don't wana make my post look 2 pages long but just posting some basic stuff about it!! incase someone dun knw wat it is!!! :S
anorexia nervosa-nervous loss of appetite. it doesnt mean that the person is never hungury; they just behave as though they have lost their appetite.!!
♥ it's the most common eating disorder in the UK
♥ 90% cases are females aged 13-18
♥1 in 250 females and 1 in 2000 males in the UK aged between 15-30 suffer from it
♥a person loses weight dramatically as the avoid food...!! (a bit obvious lol)
♥ women suffer from amenorrhoea-stop menstruation for 3 consecutive months!
♥ anxiety
♥ Body-image distortion
♥Low weight-less than 85% of the expected weight of their build, height and age.
there are different explanations in psychology for it!
♥Biological-you have an anorexic gene in you
♥neural reasons-damage to the hypothalamus, specifically the lateral nucleus(area responsible for controlling hunger) or/and abnormally high levels of neurotransmitters serotonin and this causes abnormally high levels of anxiety!
♥behavioural approach suggests that people might learn this through their envoirnment....like suppose a girl sees her frend getting compliment from a guy or someone else for looking thin and they wana get the same compliment and attension they will start to lose weight and stop eating and end up being anorexic!!!
♥there is also a psychodynamic explanation for it but lets just forget about freud ....lolz
ways of treatment
abhi study nahin kia usay....lolz
but from the vdo we saw on monday that showed this girl vicky going back in and out of hospital as she was unable to put on weight outside hospital...so i assume hosptalisation is a way to treat it where they use therapy, counselling, aromatherapy, art therapy and sometimes force-fed through the tube...
but but but 20% of cases have one episode and recover completely, while 60% follow an episodic pattern of weight gain and relapse over a number of years. remaining 20% continue to be affected and often require hospitalisation and mortality rate for those admited in hosp is over 10%.....phew!!
I have not known any one suffering from anorexia but i know so many girls who are so crazy about becoming slim that they literally spoil their health. what i have observed lack of nutrients directly hit your menstrual cycle and in turn can cause problem in pregnancy. on the other hand I have seen so many healthy girls who conceive easily and have rather smooth pregnancies.
God didn't create food to avoid it. Nutrients are so very essential for a human body. How can you run a car without fuel ? same is with human body.
