I was watching Anna’s biography…Is she a nobody yet a star or an extra-ordinary tennis player? She is the fourth highest paid athlete when it comes to endorsement money after Tiger woods, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. Does she belong in this league of skilled players?
The question is whether we should look at her as a tennis player or a sex symbol. When you look at her as a tennis player..she ranks number 70 in the world with no major grand-slams. And when you look at her as a sex symbol you just keep looking…ahem I mean looking at her record, some critics don’t give her the credit for her fame and the money that she is getting from all these endorsement deals.
What do u think..is she worth it?
Btw, currently, she is going out with Enrique Iglesias (Girls eat your heart out). :-p
Being in the league? The WTA has over a thousand players, if she's bobbing about in the 50-100 region she's obviously got some skill; however little it may be. Plus, she brings in the money and attracts those extra audiences to tournaments.
Being mentioned in the same breath as the other big names? Not a chance.
In a nutshell, she's a sex symbol/marketing icon who happens to be an above-average tennis player.
I have to say as a Tennis player she sucks - But then again who gives a damn what her Tennis is like! - She’s fine and people don’t watch her for her raquet skills! - And it was a good that she was in the game (she has now retired) as all that’s left are no-so-good-looking women on the female circuit! Grr… - And Martina Hingis retired too which is a shame - As far the endorsment deals go well I think she does deserve them - as far as everyone seems to think that sex sells and well I guess it does - She may not have all that much talent as a Tennis player but she is what is known as a “Commercial Commodity” - That means that she is someone like David Beckham - they are completely crap at their game but sticking their face on some of their advertising campaigns helps them sell - Nobody particularly likes these people but they do help sell so massive companies use them in order to boost their own image - And that’s fine with me if we keep seeing Anna naked on Billboards all around America and in Magazines and on the cover of Sports Equipment dressed in Skimpy outfits!
Is Martina Hingis popular for her tennis “skills” or the sounds she makes while playing? Ask anybody in Germany what they think of her and what shot her to stardom.
Tennis is a great sport. It’s becoming popular more for who plays rather than the sport in my opinion. You don’t see Venus and Serena Williams getting the kind of publicity that Kournikova gets … they do get some (especially when they mouth off ), but I don’t think it’s to the same extent … the the Williams’ sisters are the better players.
I have … sound effects … she is following in Martina Hingis’ footsteps … … I think I will continue watching men’s tennis and ogling Mark Phillippousis (or whatever his name is).
Martina Hingis was a very good player and pretty much dominated the scene before the Williams arrived on the scene. Anna made for decent eye candy and that's about it.
So what I gather from the replies is moaning and grunting is big in Tennis and if Hingis can learn from Monica then Anna can put on quite a show. If that’s ever the case, then even desies will be spending on the tickets instead watching her on TV
Yes Diablo, Kobye and Anna’s switcheroo is gonna be quite interesting. He bought his wife a $2 mil diamond ring and paid off his mother in law’s house mortgage…I think he is gonna be proven guilty on rape charges..There goes the legend…tsk tsk
Coming back to Anna..the bottom line is sex sells and she is a prime example. With Anna getting all the attention…I’m sure there must be a lot of jealousy among the top ranking women tennis players. Justified? Maybe /maybe not
MehnazQ: Yeah it does suck that Anna doesn’t play anymore but towards the end of her career she didn’t get many of her matches televised - and she wasn’t really involved much in the game at all - its not like much has really happened since and that we’re all missing out on much - she used to play in a televised match roughly once every 3 months! - And plus her career seemed to be plagued with injuries and little niggles - and she never really seemed to play for long periods of time at a go.
I think you’re getting her mixed up with Monica Seles - Monica is the huge ass grunter and she was the one who had the great rivalry with Steffi Graf and then was consequently stabbed in Germany.
The Williams’ Sisters are more in the public eye actually to be honest - but always for good reasons involving “good” publicity - Not to say that Anna’s is bad publicity but the Venus and Serena are always involved with more credible and respectable activities.
As for the game itself well yeah those who play it certainly do seem to care about it but outside the players themselves the game is dying and nobody really cares.
