As little one we used to ‘rope’ the cat and carry around like a pet, of course cat never liked that and we’d drag her around, or tie a thread on dragon-fly and show it as pet (cuz dogs weren’t allowed in our house) but we’d get daant-dapat from elders all the time 
. Keeping birds/pigeons is/was considered as cruelty though.
As kids we were told if you hurt a cat then somewhere a ship will sink
