What are some good books/stories to look into if I'd like to learn about "our" culture and folk lore? Hamzanama? All I've ever read/watched are some of the old Indian Ramayan tv serials and I'm trying to read Alf Laila, but my written Urdu is terrible.

If you can read Urdu, read Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi's short stories (also available online), which talk a lot about rural Punjab and its cultures
