How come ‘British’ and ‘English’ ended as Angrez and Angrezi in subcontinent?
I’ve seen / read in old movies and literature, they are referred as ‘Farangi’.
Gora saheb, Mam saheb were common in masses while referring to English people.

Re: Angrez and Angrezi
It’s most likely an apt Urdu translation for the word for Angles or Anglo, and British (or English, rather) are Anglo-Saxons.

How do French refers to their neighbor English people?
Re: Angrez and Angrezi
How do French refers to their neighbor English people?
Les Anglais.
My French is still quite rubbish, but if I were to introduce myself in France, I'd say Je suis Anglais or Je suis d'Angleterre - meaning I'm from England.
Re: Angrez and Angrezi
so this Angrez seems to came through French Anglais (who were actually Farangi) in sub-continent.

u mean to say english ppl were not farangi and only french were ?

Farangi is basically Franc

Spanish for English is Inglés
Italian for English is Inglese
Russian for English is Angliyskiy
Polish for English is Angielski
Turkish for English is Ingilizce
They all sound pretty similiar, don't they? So it seems all these are words are variant translation of the original term Angles or Anglo*.*
The word Angraiz is a proper, technical term to describe members of Anglo-Saxon race, whereas the word *Firangi *is a derogatory term used for foreigners.
Re: Angrez and Angrezi
Wiki says:
It is generally believed that the word farang originated with the Persian word farang (فرنگ](فرنگ - Wiktionary, the free dictionary)) or farangī (فرنگی](فرنگی - Wiktionary, the free dictionary)), meaning “Frank, European”. This in turn comes from the Old French word franc, meaning “Frank”, a West Germanic tribe that became the biggest political power in Western Europe during the early Middle Ages, and from which France derives its name. Because the Frankish Empire ruled Western Europe for centuries, the word “Frank” became deeply associated with Latins who professed the Roman Catholic faith by Eastern Europeans and Middle Easterners.
According to Rashid al-din Fazl Allâh, farang comes from the Arabic word afranj.[SUP][2]](Farang - Wikipedia)[/SUP] in Ethiopia faranji means white/european people In either case the original word was pronounced paranki (പറങ്കി) in Malayalam, parangiar in Tamil, and entered Khmer as barang and Malay as ferenggi.
Re: Angrez and Angrezi
So Wiki and I are in agreement. Farangi became a Sub-Continent slang for white foreigners from Europe (it's different debate that British never classified themselves as Europeans).
Re: Angrez and Angrezi
How come? Did they consider Britain a separate continent?
Re: Angrez and Angrezi
No, but a separate and superior 'Island Nation'. Britain's geographical detachment from continental Europe has always been a determining factor behind their reluctance to relate to the European identity. Historically, they never really got on Europeans, break with Catholic Rome pretty much resulted in break with Catholic Europe, and then you have episodes likeThe Spanish Armada, French Revolution, Napoleonic Wars, European Imperial proxy wars all over the world, rise of Germany etc. Winston Churchil's famous phrase "We are with Europe, but not of it" perfectly sums up with Britain's attitude as reluctant Europeans.
