from what I've read, the procesisng of emotions is in two stages, one thats done by the amgdala, which provides the instinctive, immediate reactions to it, and one that gets processed by the neocortex or your thinking brain which comes up with more sophisticated reactions. the first reaction has literally no conscious thought behind it, you can sometimes react even before your fully aware of the situation, and then the thinking brain kicks in and thinks "why did I say that? that makes no sense".
