Angelina Jolie bodyguards bailed - Mumbai

Three bodyguards of Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie have been released on bail in the western Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay).

They have been charged with “insult to religion and threatening to kill” after being involved in a scuffle with parents at a Mumbai school, police say.

Jolie was filming at the Anjuman-i-Islam school at the time.

She is in India to film A Mighty Heart, based on the life of murdered US journalist Daniel Pearl.

‘Upset’

Angry parents accused Jolie’s bodyguards of pushing and insulting them when they came to collect their children from the school on Thursday.

“Children were waiting inside for us and, when they opened the gates, those men [bodyguards] pushed our ladies and children. They also said ‘You bloody Indian’. This is just not done,” said parent Mohammed Yusuf Patni.

Mr Patni said parents were upset that the school allowed filming while classes were being held inside.

“There were actors dressed in Pakistani policemen’s uniforms. They were holding guns which scared the children,” he said.

A statement from the film producers said: "We had the full permission and co-operation of the school to film on the premises.

"Unfortunately, our arrival was impeded by the paparazzi waiting at the gates of the school.

“When the gates were opened to allow the parents in to collect their children, the paparazzi rushed into the school causing confusion.”

The lawyer for the bodyguards, Mahesh Jethmalani, told the BBC the bodyguards were released on bail of 25,000 rupees each ($555).

They have been told to report to the police every day for the next seven days.

“They’ve basically been charged with offences related to criminal intimidation,” Mr Jethmalani said.

“These are all cases of your word against mine. Looking at the circumstances I doubt if all these words were uttered.”

Attracting attention

Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt, along with their three children, arrived in Mumbai on Saturday to shoot parts of the film.

Actor Dan Futterman plays Daniel Pearl, who was abducted and murdered in Pakistan in 2002, while Jolie plays the role of his widow, Marianne.

Pitt and Jolie - one of Hollywood’s most famous couples - have had their every move followed by the media since they arrived in India in October.

Pitt has accompanied Jolie as the film is being co-produced by the company he founded along with his ex-wife, actress Jennifer Aniston.

Earlier in the week, Jolie caused a stir when she boarded a crowded local train with Futterman in Mumbai.

A photographer who managed to get into the same compartment said one of her bodyguards had threatened to throw him out of the train if he tried to get too near or take pictures.

Re: Angelina Jolie bodyguards bailed - Mumbai

In an interview, his first in India, Hollywood actor Brad Pitt has broken his silence on the bodyguard controversy. Brad Pitt said the entire incident seemed to be a terrible misunderstanding. He added that he was absolutely certain that nobody who works with him was capable of religious bias.

The bodyguards were arrested in Mumbai after an incident in a school on Thursday where the crew for the film Mighty Heart was shooting.

"This is not what Angelina and I wanted. This contradicts the message of the film we are trying to make.

“Angelina and I have a multi-racial family, we want them to respect and understand different religions,” he said.

“Maybe we should have explained our intentions when we first got here. We would not hire anyone who is racist or who would hurt or push a child,” added Pitt.

Hollywood star Brad Pitt took time off from the hectic schedule of shooting his film A Mighty Heat and spent a quiet day in the temple town.

The Seven Years In Tibet actor arrived in Varanasi by chartered plane from Mumbai on Friday and spent the day in solitude on the banks of the river Ganga for several hours.

Pitt also took boat ride in the river and sat near the ghats gazing at the flowing water in the river.

New Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS) Hollywood star Brad Pitt is so fascinated by India that he wants to come back, as he has ‘never seen a country like this’.

‘Absolutely. I’ll come back for the film (‘A Mighty Heart’ that he has come here to shoot along with companion Angelina Jolie). It’s really important to me. I hope we can pull it off well,’ he told news channel NDTV 24x7 in an interview telecast late Saturday.

‘I love Indian food. Chicken masala, dal and nan. I just love it,’ he told interviewer Barkha Dutt.

Brad denied allegations that three bodyguards of Jolie had hurled racial abuses at parents and children at a school in south Mumbai where the film unit was shooting.

Pitt said it had been a great experience shooting in India.

‘It was a great experience, the film is going to benefit for shooting here, I am very excited about it,’ he said.

He said he was so fascinated by the chaos and life in Pune that he bought a motorbike to explore the city for himself, also to give the paparazzi the slip.

‘I was so fascinated by the chaos, the traffic, different rules we have been having that I wanted to get out on the road. So I bought a helmet and was able to ride around quite peacefully. Bike is about freedom, a bike is about being by you…,’ he said.

Pitt said that he and Jolie had a great time in Goa and found the holy city of Varanasi truly amazing.

‘We had an amazing time in Varanasi. I have never seen anything like it; I have never seen a country like this. I told my friend… put this on your list; you must come here… see this,’ he said.

The Hollywood star said that he was impressed about the sheer number of people living together, living in harmony… the colours of the cities, the smell of the cities, their food and architecture.

‘Overall it’s been an extraordinary trip for us which neither of us has ever been before. We loved Dipawali (the Indian festival of lights Oct 21),’ he said.

He also said he would very much like to be here for Holi, the other Indian festival he had heard much about.

Before leaving he said one souvenir that he is definitely carrying with him is the Indian kurta pajma (loose shirt and pyjamas), which he liked very much.

In ‘A Mighty Heart’, shot in Pune and Mumbai for the last one month, Jolie plays the part of Mariane, wife of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in 2002 while investigating Islamic militants in the aftermath of the Sep 11, 2001, attacks on the US.
