Hi,
I’m about 13 weeks pregnant and i just got a letter from the doctor saying that the results of my blood test show that i am anemic as my iron level was 6.5.
I have been taking Pregnacare for about a month now so i thought this would be enough to get all my vitamins as it includes iron. I have to make an appointment with the doctor to get iron tablets now.
Did any of you have the same problem as me? was your baby okay? i’m really worried because i always thought i was very healthy and have never been anemic before.
Any advice? and which iron tablets did doc prescribe you?
Re: Anemic during pregnancy
no worries, i have been anaemic throughout my pregnancies, the doc gave me ferrous sulphate, take them regularly and eat plenty of greens and red meat, spinach, broccoli, beans etc.
My babies were fine, the only concern is your blood loss, you may end up losing too much blood and require transfusions, you will feel increasingly tired and fatigued because of it as well,
just keep taking your iron tablets, and improve your diet, and your blood count will increase InshAllah
Thanks, you're right i have been feeling soooooo tired recently actually i slept most weekend and just couldn't figure out what was going on with me. I guess it is the lack of iron.
Re: Anemic during pregnancy
I too have been extremely tired and sleepy from week 20 ... so the latest bood test showed I too am anemic ...am now taking iron tablets from week 28 afterwards.
Re: Anemic during pregnancy
I was anemic in the last trimester of my second pregnancy but all I did was increase my intake of iron tablets and within a few days, the iron levels were all good. So don't worry. You'll be fine soon. Also be sure you're getting enough meats and other iron rich foods such as spinach.
Re: Anemic during pregnancy
do a google search on "iron rich foods" and try to increase your intake of iron rich foods, but also be sure to be getting daily dose of Vitamin c to help absorb the iron. Has your doc prescribed additional or stronger iron for you to take? I recently had a blood test, and my hemoglobin count came back at 10, normal range was 12 & greater. I was prescribed an additional Iron tablet in addition to Pre-natals, plus additional folic acid. Check with your doc for best way to get your level up. Take care of yourself now & Inshallah your baby will be fine and so will you.
Thanks everyone....i went to the docs yesterday and he prescribed me some Iron tablets "Ferrous Sulphate". Thanks for the orange juice tip...i'm having a glass everyday...but it's sooo hard to eat my greens!!!
Re: Anemic during pregnancy
greens will not give u enuff iron.. i was iron deficient from my 6th month.. i was taking pregnancy vits and additional iron... it was very confusing cuz i ate meat thruout the pregnancy yet somehow i still became iron deficient.. something that really helped me was prune juice as it helps bring up those iron levels.. i swear by it.. drink half a glass everyday.. i know ppl think it iwll give u the runs but it doesnt work that way.. u will be taking iron tabs as well and that gives constipatoin.. so prune juice works out great in keeping the bowel momvent regular and soft.
but dont worry bout the baby.. i used to worry so much .. but my doc said hte baby is getting enuff from u, its u that doesnt have enuf for ureself.. during the last trimester i was tired all the time and was worrying about delivery cuz the midwife had said iron levels have to be high enuff so that u dont require a blood transfusion after delivery.
i went in with an iron level of 6.5 and had my baby normally.. and didnt require any transfusion.. but i did get presribed iron tablets and multivitamins and folic acid to take post pregnancy.. but i think thats normal for all women post delivery.
best of luck :)
and rest! dont get ure blood pumping over non necessary movement!
Re: Anemic during pregnancy
^ yeah those iron tablets are giving me conspitation... I' ll try prune juice
yesterday i went to my doc, he said i can take the iron tablets if i want but its not necessary, where as his mom's (also doc) secretary called me to get the tablets.
So i will take it as its better to take then not take i guess.
Re: Anemic during pregnancy
