In a work environment, alot of things r just running the way they r being executed from the start and the result is messy, u know u can make a difference and u know u can change and bring good results. Knowing u can make it better and u r not doing anything is just killing ur work satisfaction
But now:
If you bring up the topic in meetings, the colleagues r not happy (many which r even friends) bcos this will mean an “extra” work for which they r not being paid for. there is a serious chance of loosing good relations with many colleagues… also it will sound like u r trying to be a smart arse, when many of them are alot senior then urself
There is no point in just discussing the matter with the boss, even if he brings it up he will again use ur name, thats the way he is.
if u dont care and just do what u would like to, u ll end up isolated and the fact is u can not operate without others,… specially if alot of them r going against u
4.a. but not doing anything is also difficult for u… u feel helpless and uncreative
4.b. if u just implement it at personal level without mentioning anything, well that will be alot of work, u need the work to be divided.
so what should u do? how to deal with the situation?
Go to boss... tell him the situation, and your fears... and ask for anonymity(sp) and get him to take the initiative and get everyone to work if he agrees with your theories.
If you TELL him that you dont want ur name mentioned... he shouldn't... and at the end of the day,,, you are on his side, by trying to make things better... if he cant appreciate that and cant even keep the name to himself... thats a lousy boss, and time to move on... or just bludge like the rest of them kamchores :D
Would it help the situation if you (perhaps in conjunction with your other colleagues) write up an anonymous letter, detailing the problems and highlighting the solutions alongwith it? Would it get easier for the boss to pinpoint on who was the originator of the letter, if it were to be sent out?
Set an example by implementing the new changes to u'r self. Yea its gona be lot of work. It will give you a chance to experiment with new process and improve it. It will show others that it really works. Its easier to convince people with practicality then just by theories. Even if u'll be able to convince 1-2, than others will follow.
You have to make alliance with people who will benefit directly from your way of doing things and propose to the boss going in as a team. There is strength in numbers.
Make your suggestion as part of a Worthwhile project that pays the way for the change.
Seems you are suggesting a new procedure that will cost to implement...... However if you can show their is a return on Investment people will like that........
This sounds all too familiar! I’ve been in similar situations and can’t say that I’ve always been successful in creating buy-in for a solution that I believe in.
However, a logical first step is to formulate a well-documented case for what it is that you are recommending. A good way to go about doing this is to submit case documentation containing your value proposition along with a Call-for-Comments to your boss or someone who is in a position of authority. He/she can then circulate the call to the rest of your colleagues.
The formalism will show your boss that you are serious and genuine in your intentions and it’s not just bare wordplay to create surface level credibility. Also, your request is more likely to greet honest responses from people who might be willing to help. The documentation often acts like a screening mechanism… people who’re not interested in the initiative won’t even bother going through the whole thing and might not respond. If they do without studying your case and call, you’ll also be able to know that right away by their responses… and it will help you make a better decision as to who you want to be on your team and who you don’t.
