dont they grow up so fast mashaAllah :sniff sniff:
I have been thinking a lot about the special milestone in his life.. I woudl like your input and advice though!!We do have his docs appt. in couple of weeks for the 12 month checkup and I will ask her most of these food questions but thought I will check with the mommies and daddies and khalas and khalus and phupos and everyone who deals with the kids on regular basis
Food.. is milk still the basic source of nutrition for him? How and when do you switch them over to regular whole milk? How much should he still be drinking?
When is the time to let go of the bottle? How to make that transition? I gave him milk in sippy cup once but boy that didn’t go well with him.. probably the flow was too strong! Should I still be using the baby cereal or switch over? Does that mean cooking oatmeal? If yes, how?
What is a usual diet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a 1 year old? Specify please!
Activities.. he loves to hold pens, play with wires n cables, wooden spoons, frying pans, books! Toys don’t appeal him much.. last night I saw him charging his toy airplane with the cell phone charger (so cute :D) and he wanted to scribble on the coupon that he found somewhere.. Time to buy the crayons? What would he like to do now? Coloring? Finger painting? Blocks? Share your ideas!
Sleeping routine.. I sing him to sleep in his swing and then put him in his crib.. I don’t know if he is ready to put himself to sleep.. shall I or Shall I not bother?
yes i switched to whole milk when my baby turned 1 year, i dont give her more than 24 ounces in whole day becuse she gets constipated
i am still struggling with feeder thing
for food i started giving oats n wheatabix in breakfast and normal food whatever we eat like rice, roti everything, custard, yougart, fruits, vegetables, egg, she loves chicken nuggets.
i am not giving her crayons n colours right now because she takes in mouth, she loves blocks, all musical stuff, ball she loves playing with ball, kicking it n throwing to me thn pick it up.
sleeping, oh she started sleeping herself when she was 10 months around, i think time to stop swing n put him in crib let him try to sleep himself
MashaAllah.
Yes milk is still the main source of nutrition until I think 2 years. I already had formula cans when my daughter turned 1, so I continued with formula and when the last tub finished I switched to whole milk completely. I had started giving her whole milk 1 time with the formula as well so she would get accustomed to the taste.
I introduced sippy cups with both of my kids when they turned 1. I am not sure if the fast flow is what caused your son to not like the sippy cup because they have to suck to make liquid flow and its is not too fast in my opinion. I know because I have tried :) It is just different from the nipple they are used to with bottle so kids dont like it in the first attempt. I used to fill sippy cup with milk, juice or water and just give the kids along with the meals. Still gave them bottle for the regular milk and slowly the kids just start drinking from sippy cup as well. For me it was not just switch and forget the bottle.
For us, I started giving my kids the same food we eat when they turned 1, so I would give them rice, meat and small bites of roti. They were eating these before 1 as well but what I mean here is they started eating the meals with us. They still had other snacks like yogurt, fruit, cheese between meals.
My daughter wants to use crayons when her brother is coloring so I let her use crayons and color but only when I am around to watch her. She plays whatever her brother plays with so she is all into cars and trucks.
Buy him the big legos and wooden puzzles. I think these are good for developing fine motor skills.
Introduce the sippy!! The earlier the better. I’ve been having a hard time weaning my daughter off the bottle .. I started too late and she’s too attached to her bottle
He’s a big boy so start giving him the sippy but don’t take away the bottle completely. If the flow is too fast, they have slow medium slow sippy or nubbies (mixture of bottle and sippy cups).
If you don’t take away the bottle I hear from mommies that when they did at age 2 or 3, the kid stopped drinking milk completely.
For acitvities, keep him active. My kids like markers more than crayons. It’s a bit messier but they are much easier to hold and grasp. Books and reading.
aww thanks all.. I had a tommee tippee sippycup and the flow was too fast for him so I got him a different brand sippy cup and he loves that.. he had milk in it once but for now he just wants to play with it or prefer water in it.
how do I make the sippycup more interesting for milk? I know lots of kids who have had bottle until like 3-4 or even older and that was the only way to make the child drink milk.. is he already used to it or do I have hope?
I also got him washable markers for his birthday (yes I havent given those to him yet :D) so I am hoping he will enjoy those!
he’ll love the markers! mine does mine also loves painting which mainly involves a lot of mess and smooshing around the paint, but hey, whatever makes him happy, right? i picked up canvases from the $ store and have been handing his “art” out to family.
i wouldn’t worry too much about bottle/sippy cup just yet. mine is still taking his bottle and drinks water from a regular glass (that we hold for him, of course). he has a water bottle like a sippy cup which he loves but what’s the negative in them using the bottle? is it bad for their teeth or something?
i’d be more into figuring out his sleep routine so that he’s used to putting himself to bed. is he in his room yet? i usually make a mini-ritual out of it with a bath, and then i put him in his crib with a bottle. he usually finishes it and then falls asleep masha’Allah.
milk is a main source until they’re 1. at 1, they switch to whole milk. my paed said 4 bottles or 24 oz a day is what the kid should be having. maybe check with yours to see what yours should be having?
re: baby cereal- yup, he’s past the baby ones for sure. you NEED to make sure you introduce texture to him. you can get packets of 1 minute quaker (or any other brand) oatmeal. just put a little water and microwave it. i usually add in a dash of honey and berries which he loves. no cooking needed!
this is a sample menu of what mine was eating at 1:
whole milk x 4 bottles through the day
oatmeal with berries for breakfast
cheese and crackers for snack
mini meatballs in sauce and pasta for lunch
apple/banana/orange/any fruit really, for snack
chicken and veggies for dinner
mind you, he didn’t have this every single day. i varied the meals, of course, but also quantities depending on what he’d eaten and how much of it. some things he loved and wanted more of, some things, not so much. i’d also give him roti and rice and salan and whatever we were eating so he’d at least taste it, even if he didn’t want to eat it. you’ll out his preferences and how much he eats as you go along. the main thing is to start!
