I am new on this forum. I am Martin Van Camp, a 42 year old social worker from Belgium, Europe that is. My mum was born in Rangoon, Burma and escaped the warzone during WWII and went to live with her family in Karachi until she met my dad. I will tell you more about myself later.
For the moment I am looking for an article written by Dr. Raffat Parveen Khan: “An Urban Minority :The Goan Christian Community in Karachi”, in Kenneth Ballhatchet and John Harrison, The City of South Asia - Pre-Modern and Modern, London,1980.
I can’t find the book in Belgium and the author hasn’t replied my request so I try it this way:
Is there anyone out there who has the article (+/- 20-30 pages I guess) or would be able to help me find it besides having to buy the entire book (+/- 360 pages)?
Re: An Urban Minority :The Goan Christian Community in Karachi
Martin, welcome to the forum. Your query sounds very interesting and I'm always anxious about such historic/cultural research, can you please elaborate a little or PM me some more details and I can try and help you out more on this.
the book (and more specific the article written by Dr. Raffat parveen Khan) I would like to get my hands on was recommended by Fatima Da Silva Gracias. She wrote the article (which can be found on the internet; it is a PDF file) 'Goans away from Goa - Migration to the middle east'.
The reason why I would like to read this old article (written in 1980) is that I am doing some research to possibly write a book. You see, my greatgrandfather was the founder of Ilaco, he was the one responsible for Duarte Mansions in Karachi (his name is Laurenco Caetano Duarte). In 1995 I visited Pakistan for the very first time and somehow fell in love with Karachi. Don't ask why, I just like this strange, peculiar city of dust. I mostly stayed in Manghopir where I was doing some voluntary work in the leprosy hospital overthere.
For the moment I am (fingers crossed) hoping to get a positive answer from a local publisher to be able to go to Pakistan in july-august 2008 because I would like to write a book about Pakistan. This time a book which focusses on real people and to show the west that the country is far more than only taliban and al qaeda. On 1st of july I will definitely know if I will be able to do so and get funds to do so :)
Perhaps some historians might know more about the article, but unfortunately I don't know any. So if you can help me, please do so :biggthumb
