Is that justice or revenge?
And does it end or perpetuate the cycle of violence?

Re: An eye for an eye...
It is Islamic law so yeah it does ends violence.
Pragmatically speaking, Saudi Arabia is a case in point. While its not a perfect Islamic society they do have implemented most aspects of Islamic judicial system and that is precisely the reason they have one of the lowest crime rates in the world.
Re: An eye for an eye...
An eye for an eye is justice IMO but forgiveness is a greater deed.

Only their punishments are Islamic. They have the most unjust judicial system in the world. The reason of lower crime rate is terror of the Authorities.

what?
Re: An eye for an eye...
its justice....
Re: An eye for an eye...
good question.....one that makes you think for a bit.
I'm inclined to say that it is justice but only because the desire for revenge may drive the victim to seek greater violence than was perpetrated upon them thereby perpetuating violence.
the concept of an eye for an eye seeks to make the victim whole......
Re: An eye for an eye...
Eye for an eye is aadal (justice)
To not get eye for an eye is ehsan
and ehsan is better than aadal.

People going to mosque is their own eeman. What govt has to do with that?

All have spoken about if it is justice or not and what is greater than that.
I want to emphasize on the second part of your question. If you are following Islamic process of getting justice, viz. eye for an eye then, it has to go through the Judicial system and a body of legal judges decide for that. It will turn into chaos and perpetual cycle of violence if one were to take it in his own hands, which in turn is unislamic. I hope I made sense?

Did you ever read that from Quran;

An eye for an eye also mentioned in several passages of the Hebrew bible, so it's not something new introduced by Islam.
But then again Mullahs have difference of opinion on this too. The Quran mentions the "eye for an eye" concept as being ordained for the Children of Israel, but never promulgates the concept as if it applies for the current time. Some extremist groups & countries nevertheless applies this rule to this day such as Saudi Arabia, Taliban & some guppies. Same goes for the Rajm, some accept, some not.
We are living in 21st century, even in conservative area such as Swat, Pakistan people didn't accept such extreme laws. (remember gay-monkeys control of swat ??)

We should compensate violence with women.
Like (woman/women)s hand in marriage for an eye.
