This is an anecdote from the life of hazrat Junaid Baghdadi (Allah’s mercy be upon him). It goes like following:
“Once, a certain man presented a gift of five hundred dirhams to Shaikh Junaid Rahmatullah aliihe of Baghdad and requested that the amount should be distributed among the Shaikh’s students and disciples. The Shaikh said to him, “Do you possess any more Dirhams?” The man said that he had a lot of dinaars in his possession. The Shaikh said, “Do you wish for increase in your wealth or, are you content with what you possess?” The man said that he desired an increase in his property. The Shaikh said, “Then your need is greater than ours, for, we do not wish for an increase in what we possess in this world”. Saying this, the Shaikh declined to accept the gift and gave the money back to him.(Raudh)”
Without doubt Hazrat Junayd al Baghdadi quds sirruhu [may allah sanctify his secret] was the leader of the awliya and the sufis of his time; he was Sultan al Arifin--the Sultan of the Gnostics! Here is another episode from his life. Source: tadhkirat al awliya by Hazrat Farid ud Din Attaar quds sirruh:
One day the khalifah of the time wanted to test the piety of Hazrat Junayd. So he called his most beautiful slave girl and ordered her: " dress yourself up in the most beautiful clothes, annoint yourself with perfumes and jewellery and then go to Junayd and ask him to fornicate with you. Report back to me what happens"
After this the caliph also called a male servant of his and told him to follow the slave girl and report everything back to him.
When the slave girl reached the house of Hazrat Junayd she asked for permission to enter; when inside she tried to seduce Hazrat Junayd and said she wanted to fornicate. The great Shaykh let out such a loud scream of terror that the girl fell down dead instantly. [this was a karamaat of the Shaykh.]
The servant who had been spying, reported all this back to the Caliph. Now, the caliph had been very much in love with this slave of his and he was saddened by her death. so he went to Junayd al Baghdadi quds sirruhu and complained saying,
" I sent you my favourite slave girl and you killed her. What kind of shaykh are you?"
The great saint replied,
" You are the Amir al Mumineen. You job is to protect the Muslims. Why did you try then to ruin my 40 years of ibaadat in one moment?
"
The Caliph was ashamed of his action and repented, realising the taqwa of this great Sufi.
May Allah bless us for the sake of Sayyedna Junayd al Baghdadi quds sirruhu! Amin.
Re: An anecdote of Hazrat Junaid Baghdadi (Rahmat Allah Alai)
So if I am not mistaken the man got his reward (from Allah(SWT)) for presenting the gift and in addition he didn't even have to part from his original donation.
