Amthal ul Quran ( Beauty of Language)

Quran was revealed in a society where people were very fond of poetry and poets were awarded even leadership of tribes for a piece of poetry.

The Prophet of Islam (SAW) who was brought up in that society has good sense of poetry, but he never did poetry. Even as per some ahadees, few times, he couldn’t remember famous poetry of the time, when he tried to do that.

People called him poet, when Quran started revealed, as it attracted people for its melody (though the actual attraction was message). But this calling of poet, was not supported by one of his bitter enemies who knew lot about poetry.

Quran is full of wisdom (hikmat) and there are passages where amthal (tashbeeh and ista’ara / metaphors and allegories) are used to convey the message in effective way.

Lets share such passages from Quran and discuss the meaning / message behind those passages.

Let me start. This ayat from Surah Baqara is portraying the condition of Munafiq (hypocrites), who accepted Islam that brought light in their lives, but due to their deeds and bad intentions they lost their Iman (Noor).

Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see.
